Vehicles of all shapes and sizes require gearbox repairs at one time or another, one of the more common models is the power steering module. These modules are installed in all types of vehicles running along the road today including cars, trucks and even tractors. In order to remove the units a person must use detailed instructions for the removal process and also specialty tools.
The repair jobs are generally done by a shop or someone with extensive knowledge of the repair process because if the job is not done correctly the assembly will eventually fail. If the work is not done in a shop environment the parts have to be ordered prior to starting the job. To get the right ones the first time a person should collect the year, model and make of the vehicle.
The required tools include an air impact wrench with a half inch receptacle on it, this is because a set of half inch sockets are also required. A floor jack and jack stands will be needed to lift the vehicle and secure it during the repair operation. Power steering fluid, a screw driver, a set of wrenches and a hammer are also required.
Other items will be required as well such as power steering fluid, a screw driver, hammer and a set of wrenches. Before continuing it is very important to practice safety, without safety the chances of accidents increase dramatically. To reduce the chances of a vehicle falling off a jack during this process, jack stands are used to support the vehicle.
Removal of the box requires basic knowledge of mechanical workings, and the specialty tools listed above. In order to remove the module the first thing is to disconnect the pitman arm assembly from the drag link assembly. This is done by removing the cotter pin connecting the two together, next the nut must be removed and finally the arm can be removed with the specialty tool and a hammer.
The tension nut is removed next and is attached to the rag joint connector that is attached to the input shaft. The lines are the last item to be removed before taking out the mounting bolts and should be done with extreme care so they are not pinched or broken during removal. When the parts are disconnected and out of the way the retaining bolts are the only parts left.
The last part of the removal process includes the retaining bolts which hold the unit in place. There are a total of three bolts all together and are removed using the impact gun and the right sized socket. When pulling the unit out it is important to remember that it is quite heavy so taking care when lifting it is very important. After it has been repaired the installation process is done in complete reverse of the removal steps.
Power steering gearbox repairs are not an easy task and so the repair process should be done by trained professionals. If a person wants to venture into this line of work their best option is to purchase a unit from a junk yard and practice on it.
