Asian Inspired Home Decorating

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

There are very few themes for decorating a home that capture the imagination quite like an Asian inspired theme. There are many reasons for this one of which is the rich colors, fabrics, and textures that are the hallmark of these themes. There is a simplistic elegance about Asian decor that is almost impossible to imitate in other methods. It is simply put, stunning to walk into a room or a home that has been decorated in an Asian inspired motif.

This is not one of the lesser styles of decor when it comes to price. This elegance comes at a rather high price for the average consumer. However, the sparseness of this home decorating style make it possible when other styles with this sort of price tag would not be possible. One of the most important things to remember when attempting to bring an Asian style of decor into your home is the heavy reliance upon color and texture.

Dining rooms are particularly stunning when decorated in an Asian style. In this situation not only can the implements added to the room serve to improve and enhance the decor but also the place mats on the table can serve as an important tool in establishing the theme of this supremely elegant room. Chopsticks and dishes, particularly tea servings are other great enhancements to an Asian dining room. This is a room that many families will enjoy dining in.

It is recommended that because of the expense involved in many Asian themed home decorating styles that only one or two rooms in the home should be created based upon an Asian theme. This will keep the costs down as well as making those rooms focal points within the home rather than having the splendor lost among the excess.

If you are having a rough time narrowing down the two rooms, the bathroom also makes an excellent room in which to incorporate an Asian inspired theme. This is a room in which people go to relax and wash away the worries and stress of their days. For this reason, it makes perfect sense that some of the more tranquil and relaxing design accents of an Asian decor would be appropriate. Candles, figurines, calligraphy (waterproof of course), and Asian artwork make excellent touches for a bathroom, as do the more tranquil colors of some Asian inspired rooms. Fountains can be added to the room for an added taste of relaxation. Be sure that there is plenty of storage space as clean lines and an uncluttered surface are also important for the overall peaceful affect you should be hoping to achieve.

If either the dining room or bath or unappealing to your home decorating desires for an Asian theme you may want to take the theme into your bedroom. There are very few more romantic themes to incorporate into a bedroom than an Asian theme. You can use fabrics to create a very romantic atmosphere, rice paper window coverings to protect those inside from prying eyes, and candles throughout the room to finish off the creation. Furnishings in this room should be sparse and uncluttered. And Asian screens can be used in order to ‘section off’ the room or hide the piles of laundry or cluttered areas that you wish not to be detract from the overall romance of the room. Fans make a lovely decoration for the walls in a bedroom as does Oriental art or framed calligraphy in the words of love. Use wall sconces and indirect lighting rather than harsh, glaring overhead lights.

An Asian theme can be one of the most beautiful in the realm of home decorating if you are truly willing to invest the time and money it takes to do this theme properly. It can also be one of the most gaudy if you choose cheap and tacky decorations rather than quality accessories. If you choose to incorporate this theme into your home I hope you will keep that in mind while you are shopping.

Are you a fan of Asian-Inspired home decorating? A wall mural is the perfect way to create the atmosphere you want!

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Many homeowners are attracted to this style because it combines subtle elegance with simplicity. Using a palette of earthly tones is meant to bring the outdoors inside. This great home decorating idea uses distinct materials to help accomplish this goal. Tuscan style is unique as well as beautiful.

When deciding to use a Tuscan theme to decorate your home, you’ll be using both colors and textures. This home decorating idea implements the use of various textures, such as stone and tile for the flooring. This helps to create a natural atmosphere. Plaster is suggested for the walls to add texture. This would provide an opportunity for you to be creative and even have fun. Tables are often made of stone or tile mosaics.

Any home decorating theme that focuses on nature uses wood. One example of this is the exposed framework constructed from large wooden beams. This great home decorating idea uses wood in furniture and other accessories, and often, the goal is to make it look aged. This can be accomplished using staining techniques. Of course antique furniture would be the ideal choice.

Ceramics, silver frames, candlesticks, copper pots; these are all common in Tuscan design. Wine and wine glasses, these are also popular accessories for this great home decorating idea. These are all fabrics used to create a natural space. These materials are quite versatile and can be used for just about anything in your decorating project. Curtains, drapes, blinds, dividers, screens, place mats, floor-mats, these can all be created from the various Tuscan fabrics because of their weight, density and flexibility.

This great home decorating idea makes use good use of colors such as yellow and red. These colors are probably used in tassels or painted beads in tie-backs to accent the drapes. Using yellow and red ribbon to decorate accessories like candlesticks or jugs is common in Tuscan decorating. Any material or accessory which resembles the sea, the earth or the forest, make great additions to Tuscan style home decorating. This great home decorating idea found in Tuscan style, is a good choice for your space. The color, texture, fabric and accessories will create a warm and inviting feeling in any space in your home. Home Decorating with Textured Paint

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Textured paint and faux finishes have become more popular in recent years than at any other point in history. One reason for this is because so many home improvement stores are offering classes for those who are willing to pay the price for the paint so that the average Joe or Jane can recreate these fabulous finishes on their own walls as well. The fact is it is truly amazing what works of art can be created with the clever and creative use of textured paint.

Faux finishes can be used to create the illusion of anything from plaster or brick to leather and a few amazing things in between. Those who are skilled at applying faux finishes are in great demand for their artistic talents though most home owners can do a passable job if they are willing to take the time required to properly learn the technique. Even wood grains can be imitated through the use of a talented faux finisher and paint.

Using textured paints and faux finishes can be done in almost any room in the house though they seem to be most common in living rooms and kitchens as a major design feature. There are some ambitious homeowners who have decided to take this style of painting into every room of the home. While it may seem a good idea in theory there are some drawbacks to this as well.

First of all, textured paints and faux finishes are very time consuming. If you are hiring a professional to do the work their time is a lot of your money and this is something that really needs to be considered. Is the amount of time really worth the reward of the finished project as far as you, as the homeowner, are concerned? Most people find that it isn’t worth all that much money and time but others really appreciate the look and feel that it is vital to their enjoyment of their homes. Whichever category you fall into it is important that you realize that this could become a costly proposition.

Another thing to consider is that many who manage to bring a texture or faux finish of some sort into every room of their homes often decide after a little while to remove some of their hard work. The reason for this is that in small doses faux finishes and textured paints are novel and spectacular. In large doses they can be more than slightly overwhelming and, more importantly, unimpressive. There is something to be said about the fact that sometimes less is more.

This doesn’t mean that some homes do not wear faux finishes beautifully in almost every nook and cranny. Some homes are simply meant to be decorated from one end of home to the other end. These homes are simply lovely no matter how many new finishes are added to the walls, furniture, fireplace mantles, and bathroom cabinets. There never seems to be too much in these homes. There are some homes however that beg for moderation when it comes to designs such as this. Listen to your home when decorating and you should have a much better decorating experience overall without overwhelming either your home or your guests.

If faux finishes and/or textured painting is something you would like to incorporate into your home decorating plans you should be delighted to discover that there are many, many resources both online and offline that can assist you with your goals. The first and best choice is to check with local hardware and home improvement stores in order to see if they are offering any free workshops on faux finishes or textured painting in your area. If they are then you are set. However, if they are not your local library may prove to be a valuable source for videos, magazines, and books that offer step-by-step instructions. The Internet is also an excellent source. Do not forget the value of spaces such as YouTube and Google Video as they may have some actual demonstrations or how to videos to help as well.

Do you want an easy and inexpensive alternative to textured or faux painting? Wall murals make it easy to create the custom look you want, plus, they’re easy to install and remove! They are even available as nursery wall stickers.

Ideas For Interior Design

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Redecorating your house really isn’t that simple and it only becomes even less so when you become stuck for ideas. The only real way to get over this shortage of interior design ideas, is to sit down, put your feet up and have a cup of tea or coffee.

I’m not joking, there’s no better way of getting a fresh perspective on things than taking a break from what you are doing. In the first place, you become more relaxed, and in the second place a steaming cup of tea or coffee is always welcome.

Once that you’re sitting down comfortably and are suitably relaxed, close your eyes and create a mental picture of the room that you are going to do up. Even if you are redecorate more than one room, it’s always a good idea to start with one room first, working your way logically through to the next one and then the next one.

Before you commence your journey through the maze of interior design ideas, get yourself a notebook and pencil so that you can jot down any good ideas you have before they are forgotten

So, just sit back and picture the room in your mind. Try and see it as you want it to look. And if that’s too hard, then first try to replace separate bits and pieces. This is always a good way to work. If you’ve still got a mental drought on interior design ideas, then leaf through some interior design catalogues beforehand so that you have at least a working idea of what you can do to change your room.

The interior design catalogues need not be anything more grand than your free local department store catalogue, turned to the home furnishing pages. Then again, these days you also get specialist shops which deal only with redecorating. If you have the time, a quick trip down to one of these might also help to end the lack of interior design ideas, and will probably get you started again.

These stores will have staged sets of many designs, giving you a good idea of what your room could look like. However, if you’re going to one of these places, be prepared to spend some cash as no matter how tight a hand you keep on your wallet, you’ll always find something you want to buy.

This is not necessarily a bad thing to do, but unless you watch out you could end up buying things you don’t need. And without a proper idea of what you want the room to look like, this can turn out disastrous. Not to worry though, if you keep your goal in mind, you can go back home and get a start on redecorating your rooms the way you like.

And now that you’ve managed to get at least some interior design ideas of what your rooms should look like, your whole redecorating project should be that much easier and that much more fun.

It has got to be just right for you and it has to last for years with grace. The colours shouldn’t clash, and you must be able to bear the sight of it day after day from when you finish it for many years to come.

The perfect bathroom design should include every amenity known to man and you should still have enough room to move around without bumping your head or your elbow on some protruding edge. Your perfect bathroom design should also pass the test of time and still look as charming as when you first remodelled it. Its not too much to ask really, only a minor miracle on the scale of feeding the 5,000.

All right, let’s be completely honest about it, they are the kind of bathroom remodeling ideas that everyone is searching for, but which no-one has yet found. Or at least not to their full satisfaction. So, there is really only one thing you can to do, and that is to cut corners here and there on your perfect bathroom design. In this case the whole of your bathroom remodeling ideas may need to be revised. Having said that, there’s really not too much that can go that wrong if you stick to a really simple bathroom design. One that is easy to implement and is also easy on the wallet. Something else that you may want to think about is simple maintenance.

Even a bathroom the size of an aircraft carrier should be easily maintainable. This does not need to be anything elaborate and can even be something as simple as getting a small bathroom caddy on which you can place a number of your necessary items.

For sure, you could always go to the other extreme by taking away all your old stuff and replacing them with state-of-the-art, easy to clean gadgets instead.

Country Decorating Ideas

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

For us who live in the country decorating ideas are not difficult to come by. Personally speaking, I find that a lot of my inspiration derives from the world around me. When I say that, I don’t mean to imply that I use the most obvious aspects of the country around me, only that if you look hard enough you’ll always find a subtle mixture of country decorating ideas that you will be able to incorporate into your own stylish home decor.

Doing your home up with country decorating ideas is great but if you don’t make it blend in naturally with your surroundings your house will stick out like a sore thumb intruding upon the glories of nature. Haven’t you ever looked at a house in the country and thought to yourself: how beautiful and peaceful it was, and how much you’d really love to live there?

Have you ever wondered why this was so? Undoubtedly, it was for its simplicity and elegance, together with the fact that it blended in so well with its surroundings. If you live in the country, you’re probably not sure what I’m talking about and you are wondering why I ‘m going on about it.

Maybe you’ve been living in the country most of your life and you really can’t understand what’s so special about the old country decorating ideas and homes that blend in with nature. After all, a country house is much like any other house that you’d find anywhere else. Or so you might think.

Well, I think you’d be wrong on that count! Country houses are a sight for sore eyes for those people who have been living in a concrete city. So, if you’re fortunate enough to live in the country enjoy the it.

When you own a home in the country decorating ideas should be flooding into your head every moment of the day and with only a little planning on your part, you can make your everyday country home into a cozy country retreat.

The only drawback I’ve found with this so far is the number of ideas I get from my surroundings. That might not sound like a bad thing, but trust me, there’s nothing worse than having country decorating ideas pouring out of your fertile mind with almost no pause and not being able to implement them all.

However, when this flow begins to happen, I just lie back and let it overwhelm me. I’ve always found that there is no use fighting against the inevitable, although a little dreaming never did any harm. If the ideas I’ve had are really amazing and grab my attention, I write detailed notes about what I’d like to do.

So, no matter whether you want to change your home into a country retreat, or whether you want to redecorate the home you already have with country decorating ideas, they should be easy to come by and just as easy to put into practice. A country home is just the place to be to rest and relax from your hectic working day.

Decorating Teen Rooms

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Teen rooms are the bane of mothers everywhere. It’s not even like when they were younger. In those days, if their rooms were in a mess, you could shout at them and get them to tidy it up, and, barring that, you could go in and do it. However, when it comes to teens and their rooms you’re dealing with something completely different.

True, you could go and ask them to clean up their rooms. And yes, you could shout at them a little if you wanted to, and go and clean the room yourself. However, that’s when all hell breaks loose. Teen rooms are sacred places and not to be entered into lightly.

Let Heaven help anyone who tries to clean up the mess on the carpet. It was there for a good reason and you just had absolutely no right whatsoever to touch it. At least, that will be what most teens will say and, you being the patient, loving mother that you are, will just roll your eyes skywards and explain that the pizza and grubby, old shirt thing just don’t work well together and that you were just rescuing them from impending plague.

Your teens will in turn roll their eyes and scream, that no it wasn’t about to grow legs and walk off on its own, and if it was then wouldn’t that be a great science project. You keep cleaning and they keep putting things back. End of story, and you’re basically right back at square one.

Naturally, one way you could deal with this dog’s dinner is to redecorate it. Teen rooms might be sanctities for them, but even they would love it if you gave their rooms a great makeover.

That’s not to say that the room will be any cleaner once you’ve finished and they’ve moved back in, but at least you’ll get to see the inside of the room long enough to tide you over for the next couple of years. That is unless you’re thinking of redoing their rooms every year.

But now you come to your next problem. Since teens are famously different when it comes to their rooms. You might find that your teen rooms are decorated quite differently from what you expected and what you would have done first of all. This is where a comprise should be struck, if your teen wants black for his room, then say you want another colour too that will offset the black.

Be prepared to compromise a little on your ideas no matter how ridiculous their ideas seem. After all, they’re only a teen for a while and later they will look back with horror on what bad taste they had.

It is your duty as a parent to give them these years in their lives that they can look back on with mock horror, and ban their kids from doing the same to their own teen rooms.

How To Decorate Children’s Rooms

Monday, April 26th, 2010

If you’re bored with the way your home looks, the best thing you can do is redecorate it. Not necessarily all at once of course, as this will lead to headache upon headache and is almost guaranteed to bring stress into your life when you really didn’t need it. However if you start room by room, your redecorating project will become that much easier and more manageable.

The next step is to figure out which room you want to decorated first. It’s not always an easy choice to make, but it must be done nevertheless. How about beginning by decorating the kids’ rooms first as this will lead to a general mood of satisfaction amongst them and can help you in the long run too.

Decorating kids rooms can be an enjoyable way to pass your time and also gives you the chance to bond with your children as well. There’s no better way to get close to your children than by getting down to their level and talking about the things that appeal to them. Decorating their rooms might be the best way to do that.

But where do you begin? If you have more than one child you need to be careful whose room you’re going to be decorating first, as things can get fraught and tension can rise. Decorating kids rooms can be fraught with tension if you don’t handle it properly, so I’ve found that the best way to handle this is to flip a coin in the air and have the kids call out what they want.

This method might not be appropriate if you’ve got more than two kids or more than two rooms to decorate, in which case I’d recommend you just get on with it and start all the decorating at once instead of tackling it room by room.

However, at least you’re not redecorating the whole house in one go and this way you promote a happier mood amongst the children with no-one thinking that they have been done down by getting their room decorated last. What tends to happen though when the you’re decorating the rooms with the kids’ help is that more paint gets splashed everywhere than where it should be. But then that was part of the reason you decided to begin decorating the kids rooms and perhaps even their play areas first, wasn’t it.

You’ll be much happier for at least getting started on your decorating project and your kids will be happier for having their rooms redecorated too, not to mention the sheer fun you’ll be having while you’re busy doing all this. This isn’t of course to say, that decorating kids rooms isn’t hassle or stress free.

On the contrary, you’ll probably get a boatload more stress by the time you’ve finished, but at least you’ll have had the pleasure of getting closer to your children and seeing their rooms clean and tidy for at least one day before the kids move back into them again.

Ideas for Painting Walls

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Here you are then, standing in your new house! Its a bit of a mess though since the vendor was in a hurry to sell and had been in the middle of renovating. Still, you don’t really mind that though, since it gives you the perfect chance to do your new house up exactly the way you want it.

However, now you need to decide where everything goes and what colours will suit which rooms, but you don’t have any wall painting ideas.

So, you eagerly look through your new keys and wander through your new home. The moment you step in through a door ideas hit you. That stylish standard lamp you bought a while ago would look great in the corner, and you’re pretty sure that your existing couch set will fit in that other room. And you know that a mahogany table would look stunning in the hallway. The only thing you really don’t have much of a clue about are wall painting ideas.

You definitely don’t want to just dab on a few coats of bland paint and be done with it. What you want is a masterpiece, something that you can look on with pride every time you see it. And, of course, you should be able to keep looking at it with pleasure for quite some time to come as well, so it shouldn’t be too severe.

But where can you get good wall painting ideas from, and how can you go about getting the wall painting actually done? There are a few ways that you could go about this, the easiest of which being if you have an artistic flair, so that you could get your wall painting ideas out of your head, so to speak and paint the walls as you like. Unfortunately, most of us aren’t very artistic and we are hesitant to pick up a brush or roller and apply the first coat of paint without any guidance. In this scenario then, you will need some help.

You could start off by hiring a professional decorator to help you to decide what would look suit your home or you could sit down and watch some DIY TV programs, in which they show some pretty good ideas on what to do when re-decorating a house and will even give you some stylish wall painting ideas.

If neither of these options is viable for you though, you might just try going down to your local DIY shop with fabric swatches and colour sheets of your most prominent pieces of furniture and enlist their help on stylish wall decorating ideas.

You may come up with a hodge-podge of wall painting ideas with this last suggestion, but I found that it was the one that worked best for me and now I’m very proud of my ‘personalized’ house, because it reflects who I am just perfectly.

South-western Home Decor

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

So what exactly is southwestern home decor and how can you get it into your own home? Well, to start with southwestern home decor reflects the southwest and all its most famous traits. Southwestern home decor involves colourful throw rugs, gorgeous wall hangings, and if you look hard enough, you will even unearth some great kitchen accessories too.

If you’re thinking about introducing southwestern home decor into your home, first of all, you have to check whether it will blend in with your existing decor or whether it will clash horribly. Almost all southwestern home decor involves bright, eye catching colours and stunning designs and motifs.

So, if your existing furniture would clash with any of these lovely pieces you can do one of two things. Firstly, you could always just throw out every single piece of ratty and unwanted furniture that you already have and replace it with gorgeous pieces of southwestern home decor. Or you could just buy one or two pieces of the southwestern home decor range and match it selectively to your existing pieces.

Personally speaking, I would rather replace everything I have since there’s some wear, but in reality that’s just not possible. For one thing it would just be too expensive, and for another I would rather not have to listen to a lecture from my mother about extravagance. I’ve found out that you can get away from from your friends but not from your mother!

However, I’m also a little happy that I didn’t give into my initial impulse and redecorate everything in a southwestern home decor style. Sure, it does look really nice, but sometimes I also like the serenity that some of my other pieces of furniture bring about in me. Therefore, I have now come up with the perfect solution and have instead resorted to buying one-off pieces that attract my attention and sprinkling my home with those instead.

And I have to admit that its made quite a difference in the appearance of my whole home. Lush and rich pieces of the more traditional furniture now rest quite comfortably with the more vibrant and stunning designs of my southwestern home decor. I’ve also got hold of a great throw rug for my bathroom floor and a beautiful set of bathing towels. My kitchen has a new set of southwestern motifs, and my foyer has the most wonderful lampshade and statue in full view.

Though all of this might sound over the top, I’ve found that this is the best way to bring the glories of southwestern home decor into my life, without going all out and replacing your whole house with southwestern decor and motifs.

After all, you just want to bring a little of southwestern decor to your home, not the whole thing. Oh, and did I forget to mention the gorgeous tapestry I bought the other day? It’s just perfect.
