Ideas for Painting Walls

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Here you are then, standing in your new house! Its a bit of a mess though since the vendor was in a hurry to sell and had been in the middle of renovating. Still, you don’t really mind that though, since it gives you the perfect chance to do your new house up exactly the way you want it.

However, now you need to decide where everything goes and what colours will suit which rooms, but you don’t have any wall painting ideas.

So, you eagerly look through your new keys and wander through your new home. The moment you step in through a door ideas hit you. That stylish standard lamp you bought a while ago would look great in the corner, and you’re pretty sure that your existing couch set will fit in that other room. And you know that a mahogany table would look stunning in the hallway. The only thing you really don’t have much of a clue about are wall painting ideas.

You definitely don’t want to just dab on a few coats of bland paint and be done with it. What you want is a masterpiece, something that you can look on with pride every time you see it. And, of course, you should be able to keep looking at it with pleasure for quite some time to come as well, so it shouldn’t be too severe.

But where can you get good wall painting ideas from, and how can you go about getting the wall painting actually done? There are a few ways that you could go about this, the easiest of which being if you have an artistic flair, so that you could get your wall painting ideas out of your head, so to speak and paint the walls as you like. Unfortunately, most of us aren’t very artistic and we are hesitant to pick up a brush or roller and apply the first coat of paint without any guidance. In this scenario then, you will need some help.

You could start off by hiring a professional decorator to help you to decide what would look suit your home or you could sit down and watch some DIY TV programs, in which they show some pretty good ideas on what to do when re-decorating a house and will even give you some stylish wall painting ideas.

If neither of these options is viable for you though, you might just try going down to your local DIY shop with fabric swatches and colour sheets of your most prominent pieces of furniture and enlist their help on stylish wall decorating ideas.

You may come up with a hodge-podge of wall painting ideas with this last suggestion, but I found that it was the one that worked best for me and now I’m very proud of my ‘personalized’ house, because it reflects who I am just perfectly.

South-western Home Decor

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

So what exactly is southwestern home decor and how can you get it into your own home? Well, to start with southwestern home decor reflects the southwest and all its most famous traits. Southwestern home decor involves colourful throw rugs, gorgeous wall hangings, and if you look hard enough, you will even unearth some great kitchen accessories too.

If you’re thinking about introducing southwestern home decor into your home, first of all, you have to check whether it will blend in with your existing decor or whether it will clash horribly. Almost all southwestern home decor involves bright, eye catching colours and stunning designs and motifs.

So, if your existing furniture would clash with any of these lovely pieces you can do one of two things. Firstly, you could always just throw out every single piece of ratty and unwanted furniture that you already have and replace it with gorgeous pieces of southwestern home decor. Or you could just buy one or two pieces of the southwestern home decor range and match it selectively to your existing pieces.

Personally speaking, I would rather replace everything I have since there’s some wear, but in reality that’s just not possible. For one thing it would just be too expensive, and for another I would rather not have to listen to a lecture from my mother about extravagance. I’ve found out that you can get away from from your friends but not from your mother!

However, I’m also a little happy that I didn’t give into my initial impulse and redecorate everything in a southwestern home decor style. Sure, it does look really nice, but sometimes I also like the serenity that some of my other pieces of furniture bring about in me. Therefore, I have now come up with the perfect solution and have instead resorted to buying one-off pieces that attract my attention and sprinkling my home with those instead.

And I have to admit that its made quite a difference in the appearance of my whole home. Lush and rich pieces of the more traditional furniture now rest quite comfortably with the more vibrant and stunning designs of my southwestern home decor. I’ve also got hold of a great throw rug for my bathroom floor and a beautiful set of bathing towels. My kitchen has a new set of southwestern motifs, and my foyer has the most wonderful lampshade and statue in full view.

Though all of this might sound over the top, I’ve found that this is the best way to bring the glories of southwestern home decor into my life, without going all out and replacing your whole house with southwestern decor and motifs.

After all, you just want to bring a little of southwestern decor to your home, not the whole thing. Oh, and did I forget to mention the gorgeous tapestry I bought the other day? It’s just perfect.

Kitchen Decorating Ideas

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

It’s a Saturday morning and you’re sitting there waiting for your coffee machine to finish its various gurgles and noises, so you can have that vital early morning cup of coffee. Idly, you look about your kitchen and notice a fleck of paint missing from the corner of the door. It had happened years ago but you never really took any notice of it before now.

Your gaze continues to stray and your eye gets caught by a patch of mildew growing under the sink, then you notice the ugly brown colour that your ceiling has turned right above where the cooker stands.

The paint is slightly off colour, and the only papered wall is beginning to look outdated and grubby. You take a fortifying sip of your now-ready coffee and decide that a little bit of kitchen decorating is called for.

Where do you start though? And how soon can you get started? Now that you’ve finally spotted all the little signs of decay that you had been quite successfully ignoring up until that day, you can’t wait to start modest kitchen decorating plans.

However, this is decision time. Just how small do you mean to keep your kitchen decorating plans? Can you get away with just sloshing a fresh coat of paint on everything or will you need to go to the trouble of removing the wallpaper off the wall, and finding out what had caused that mildew stain.

Sure enough, it all depends on you and your budget, but if you can spare the time, energy and money, you’d probably do better, in the long run. to solve all your kitchen decorating problems at once. That would include stripping off the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs, and maybe even sanding down your wooden floors if you have them. If you’re going to do a complete job of kitchen decorating however then you’ll also need that all important final coat of fresh paint to smarten up your kitchen.

You might also want to think about replacing those old lace curtains as they’re also probably looking distinctly old by now. So, go ahead and splash out on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains and while you’re about it, you might want to think of buying a new set of tea towels as well. It doesn’t hurt to go all out when you can.

And when you’ve eventually finished, you will be able to sit back and enjoy your new kitchen and remember that weekend morning that started it all off. You’ll have absolutely no regrets whatsoever, since your kitchen decorating project has provided you with a far better kitchen than you had ever expected.

A feeling of contentment rushes through you as you bring your new coffee mug to your lips. Life just doesn’t get any better than when you’re enjoying the fruits of your efforts and labour.

Decorating Ideas for Inside the Home

Monday, March 29th, 2010

The cold of winter has got you by your short tails and you’re pfaffing around trying to decide what to do with yourself. You’re snowbound and the only thing that you can think of doing is sitting in front of the fire, drinking hot chocolate and staring broodingly out of the window. The only problem with that is that you’ve already been doing just that for a while now and you’ve have had quite enough of fires, hot chocolate and brooding.

Now you’re itching to do something different, so, you turn to the only comfort you have and switch on the TV. You’re instantly captivated by one of those numerous shows about how you can jazz up your home. You find yourself inundated with decorating ideas: ideas on both interior decor and exterior decor.

So, you finally find yourself entranced by a program that you would have dismissed earlier and jump out of your seat to get a pen and notebook to write down all those fantastic ideas. In no time at all, you’ve run out of pages in your notebook and have to leave your warm armchair to go fetch another one.

Before you get back to your chair, you’ve made a detour around your house and have seen many of the things that you’ve spent a lifetime trying to avoid – the cracks in the bedroom wall, the faint spot of mildew in the bathroom, the paint chipping off many of the walls.

The list is endless and could easily cover several pages. So you dutifully sit down, and alongside your notes on various decorating ideas on interior design and general refurbishing, you studiously take down all the little things that need fixing, replacing or refitting.

The list naturally spans more than even your second notebook can hold but you decide to stop there, because it’s giving you writer’s cramp, besides you already have all the pertinent facts to hand, so now you set about sorting them out into sections that you can easily carry out.

And that is not an easy job, when your decorating ideas, interior designs and room-by-room list of snags and flaws is all jumbled up in one dismaying pile. So, you turn to the tried and true, age-old solution of sitting in the middle of the floor surrounded by your notes in an attempt at finding some logical order for you to follow later.

When you eventually reach that sublime state of order, you lay back with a tired but satisfied countenance. The knowledge that you’ll now have enough decorating ideas and interior design plans and less time on your hands during those long hard months of winter, sends a rush of contentment flowing through you. There’s nothing like a job well done and the knowledge that come springtime, your home is going to look nothing like its shabby former self.

Jobs in Interior Design

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Are you the kind of person who is always changing or redoing your room or even your house? Do you find yourself more satisfied and fulfilled when you’re doing this than when you’re doing any other kind of job? Then perhaps you might want to look into a career change such as going for interior design jobs.

If you’re stuck in a rut of a job and want to go for something different, then this might be exactly what you’re looking for in your life. Working in interior design jobs can be an enjoyable and profitable way for you to spend your time, and if you play your cards right, then there could be quite a lot of benefit to you.

Before you go off and hand in your notice to your present employer however, I’d advise you to consider it very carefully. Remember that, although the market for interior design jobs is larger now than ever before, most interior design jobs are for the self-employed and so you will have to tender for each job, so you might not actually win any jobs when you first start.

Therefore, you must first make certain that interior designing is really what you want to do. And if it is, then make sure that you have enough capital and such saved up for you to be able to live comfortably until your new career takes off

If this doesn’t sound quite so interesting to you now, you could always just keep doing your old job and continue with any interior design jobs that you get at the same time until you feel comfortable enough to choose between the two. It’s probably safe to assume that by that point, you would have made up your mind whether you wanted to continue doing interior design jobs or not.

You also have the choice of attending an interior design college or taking some interior design courses to further your interior design interests. This is a really good way for you to test the water before you risk too much. An added bonus with either of these options is that they can be completed with ease and shouldn’t present you with any real hardship.

Taking any of these courses will only enhance your natural ability and develop any talent you have in the field of interior designing. This in turn makes it simpler for you to try for more interior design jobs by giving you a boost in confidence and knowledge, so that you’re better placed to stand up to whatever comes your way.

The most difficult part will be taking that all important first step of coming out your nice safe cocoon to go into the unknown world of interior design jobs. However, for the person who’s got the interior design bug, there’s no better way to satisfy their interest than by going in for interior design jobs. You’ll find your energy levels and creativity blooming as never before.

Black And White Ideas For Stylish Home Decor

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

When people start thinking about living room decorating ideas and making changes to their residence, whether it be one or two rooms or even the entire house, the first question that usually comes to mind is ‘what colour’. Usually, people choose colours that they are fond of or those which match pieces of their existing furniture. When looking for living room decorating ideas, one idea which is perhaps too often overlooked is decorating with the two basic colours (or shades, to be accurate) ” black and white.

Black and white, when used in decorating demonstrates style and creates drama. Top interior designers say that every room in the house could benefit from using a touch of black. Black is a colour which anchors and grounds a room. Adding sophistication, black is certainly a colour that demands attention. Living room decorating ideas for a home using black may include accessories such as light fixtures, trim or furniture. Black serves to bring definition to the focal points in a room. Black is just one of the colours that stands out, but it is definitely one of the most eye-catching!

Decorating with the shades of black and white in your living room decorating ideas, provides a clean, fresh, elegant air to the mood of the room. This combination can be added to any room in a home making it a sophisticated area. Black and white are often used in contemporary home decorating and frequently used to accent other colours in the French Country style. It may be hard to visualize but there are many ideas for decorating a home using combinations of only these two basic colours.

The floor is a great area to start when you’re having living room decorating ideas. Black and white vinyl tiles laid alternately make a beautiful chessboard pattern and gives a clean and elegant appearance. Black marble used on the floor, accented by wide white baseboards is another beautiful idea for decorating a room. Laying white ceramic tiles with a black border or simply painting the floor black or white and using pattern stencils of the opposite colour for decoration is also really stunning. These all are great ideas for re-vamping a home.

Can you imagine anything more perfect than white walls? Painting the walls white or even an off-white makes a perfect backdrop for accessories such as shelving framed in black. What magnificent living room decorating ideas! Elegant black window surrounds or black shutters against a clean, crisp white wall would definitely create an air of sophistication. Perhaps a glass-topped table with a black iron rim and black chairs? These are terrific ideas for decorating a room using only black and white.

A bedroom decorated using black and white would be lovely stylish home decor too. A black or white iron bed-frame, covered with a striped black and white duvet or eiderdown. For the pillow cases, you could use either all black or all white and could add throw cushions in the opposite colour.

A chunky leather black or white armchair or sofa in the corner would certainly accent the living room decorating ideas. Then you could have the white walls with a stylish piece of artwork, framed in black, hanging on it. That would surely add to the modern feel of your living room decorating ideas. Black furniture against the stark white walls would definitely look really neat and tidy and you could jazz it all up with accessories like pewter or silver candlesticks, jugs or vases.

If you think the stylish home decor needs a little colour to complete the look, perhaps a throw or cushion in a bold color like red or gold, for the chair in the corner of the room would be enough to accent the room. Ideas for decorating a home are numerous. However, finding one that suits you and those that live in your home with you is important. It’s nice to do something radical and off-the-wall but remember you must be able to live with it for quite sometime.

Decorating Your Bathroom And Kitchen

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

For people who seem to have everything or for the people who are bored with their lifestyle, there are several things that they can do to spruce-up their lives. Maybe one of the best ways though is to start redecorating one’s house. Two of the first places you should consider redecorating are your bathroom and kitchen.

These are usually the most overlooked and most used rooms in the entire house. Think about it, have you redecorated at least even one of these rooms within the past five years? The answer is probably going to be no. In which case think back to the last time you even looked closely at your bathroom or kitchen other than to clean them.

Probably, if you noticed anything at all, you put the notion off until a future date when you could devote more time to decorating your bathroom or kitchen. At that time though, the place probably didn’t look as old as it does now, after all, the years add up and even though you’ve been keeping it spotlessly clean you can’t stop the slow march of time.

The chances are that if you were to take a closer look now, you’ll find that the curtains are looking a might shabby and ragged around the edges, as are the bathroom rugs. And let’s not even talk about the toilet roll holder. It is quite true that they don’t make them like they used to, and with very good reason too!

So, do yourself a favour and throw out all that unnecessary clutter in the bathroom and get yourself some new accessories – you will be surprised at what lovely things you can find these days. Besides, you’ve probably been eyeing that lovely bathroom set you saw in the shop for some time, so at the very least now you will have a good reason to go out and splash out on yourself.

And while you’re at it, don’t forget to buy that nice new spice rack you saw last week for the kitchen and a few mats that can be used in either room. They should be resilient to such everyday occurrences as water, soap, oil grease, fat and all the other things that somehow seem to become stuck to carpets.

However, if you’re looking for some new ideas about decorating your bathroom or your kitchen, there are a number of sources you can get your inspiration from. The best one I’ve found so far are the catalogues, which you can browse through to your heart’s content.

With all these options, you could even substitute something that is a bit cheaper for the items you want in the catalogues. This is the easiest method to get your decorating projects started and to keep yourself pleasantly busy for some time and to transform your long suffering bathroom and kitchen into brand new, glitzy areas.

Stylish Country Home Decor

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Your house is finally spick and span and you sit down and put your feet up for a minute with a nice cup of coffee by the side of you and you pick away at your cake. You are tired but it’s that good kind of weariness when you know you’ve done a hard day’s work and you have no regrets about it. A feeling of contentment settles about you and you look around you with satisfaction.

A magazine lies in front of you tantalizingly within reach and you give in and pull it to you, intent on enjoying your well-deserved rest. The main cover story jumps out at you, entitled ‘Country Home Decor’. Naturally you flip through eagerly to that very section, you had only just read an article on some stylish country home decor about converting a house into a small country retreat in another magazine and it had greatly interested you.

Page upon page of the magazine is filled with what can only be described as the most perfect country home decor you can imagine. You gaze longingly at the various styles and furnishings you see gracing the magazine’s pages. A quick look up from your magazine assures you that your own modest abode hasn’t changed magically into one of those lovely country homes you were just looking at.

A sad sigh passes your lips at the disappointment and so you go back to reading your magazine article. You had never thought that you were the type of person who could stand the country home decor style but now upon consideration you think you just might be able to.

Now without your even realising it, you start marking the pages that interest you the most, making small mental calculations on how best to create the same effect but on the smaller budget that you have to spend. After all, it just wouldn’t do to spring for that lovely Welsh dresser and have to go without your freshly ground whole bean coffee, would it?

However, you could definitely go for that appealing table runner without any problem. And if you gave all those modern chrome coffee mugs and dinner sets to charity you wouldn’t really be splurging, would you, since you would’ve done your best for charity and donated all these things unselfishly?

And what about swapping those snazzy blinds for something that’s a bit more in the country home decor style. And while you’re going about it, perhaps you could even exchange that ugly lampshade you got as a Christmas gift for something a little more country.

The only thing that is left for you to do now is to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labours and gaze with beaming pride upon your beautifully redecorated home. Furnished, naturally enough, in the best of country home decor style that you could gain from every source that you came across, like that first magazine which started it all off.

Shower Curtains In Fabric

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Once upon a time, fabric shower curtains went the way of the dodo and glass shower doors became fashionable. But, like most fads, common sense regained control and the fashions of yesterday have come around full circle. You’ll now find that fabric shower curtains are fashionable once again and are readily available most at stylish home decor stores.

However, don’t jetison your old glass doors just yet. The convenience and smart look of the glass doors seem to be firmly entrenched with some people. Adherents of glass doors will swear by these and will even sometimes be ready to lay down their reputations for them.

You’ll discover, when discussing fabric shower curtains, that their owners are laid back and will smile when asked about their preferences. Naturally, they’ll defend their fabric shower curtains but they also admit to seeing the benefits of glass shower doors as well. No dripping from the bottom of the curtain, no constantly damp curtain folds that need to be separated out each morning in order to prevent mildew.

Most convenient of all, is the easy cleaning afforded by glass shower doors. However, as the fans of fabric shower curtains will also tell you, glass doors have their downsides too, the biggest of which being that if you permit the cleaning of the doors to go for even one week, stains will begin to form along the sides where they’re fixed to the wall and some of these seem to have a much stronger will than you do.

And if you don’t perform a good regular cleaning of the glass shower doors, your otherwise nice clean bathroom will start to look rather grubby. The reason though why fabric shower curtains are an all time favourite of many people in the know, is for just one reason and one reason only. This is also what leads these people to have a smug grin on their faces even after they’ve just spent the last half hour cleaning their bathroom. Fabric shower curtains are disposable and therefore can be changed easily.

Yes, that’s the one massive why fabric shower curtains continue to be a firm favourite with a lot of people. Have you ever tried changing your glass doors on a regular basis? It just won’t happen and its doubtful if it will ever happen within three years, unless that is you take a hammer to it.

So, now you know the reason for that mysterious smile and why fabric shower curtains never really went out of fashion. Convenience, more convenience and still more convenience. So if you’re thinking of changing from your glass shower doors to the more convenient, disposable fabric shower curtains don’t be put off by having to get started

Once you remove those doors, your life is bound to become simpler, and if it’s not, just swap one set of fabric shower curtains for new ones. If nothing else it’ll make you feel better!

Home Decor On The Cheap

Monday, November 16th, 2009

If you’re redecorating your home, you’ll naturally want to use only the best materials. However, you’ll often find that the best is also very expensive as well. Unfortunately, most of us can’t afford to splash out on the up-market things in life, especially when we’re involved in the process of redecorating our homes.

That’s where the many discount home decor stores will come to your rescue. In these stores, you’ll find that you can sometimes witness a miracle and find that you can actually get those finer things at a fantastic discount.

Some of the best discount home decor can be found easily at your local department store. That’s probably the last place you might think of looking for discounts but if you catch it at the right time, seasonal sales will drive the prices down to discount store prices. It doesn’t get better than that, especially if you don’t really want to spend the time going around looking for discount stores or warehouses.

Which leads us, naturally enough, to the next discount home decor shops – discount warehouses, in which you are presented with a wide range of choice from which you can buy your discount home decor and fittings. These large warehouse stores are ideal if you’re happy spending the time doing a bit of browsing.

Be careful though, because if you buy from these discount warehouses, you’re quite likely to see your perfect picture hanging in your neighbour’s house as well. You should also go prepared to keep a tight grasp on your wallet as some of the items will simply demand to be bought. In this case, you’ll find that the new discount home decor items you went in to buy, have multiplied substantially in number before you come back out.

Another good option, and one which I constantly use, is the Internet discount stores. Just type in the words “Discount Home Decor” into any Internet search engine and it will produce such a large number of results that you may even become inundated.

The best way to deal with this is simply to look through a few of the returned stores and find one that you like. As you progress, you can always cull many of them and find ones that better suit your requirements more exactly.

The Internet option is also good if you decide to go through your local department store’s Internet listings as well. Many times you’ll find a variety of items at discount store prices that you wouldn’t get at the store itself.

Delivery charges for home decor items bought over the Internet is usually very low or even free if you spend over a certain sum.

Any or all of these options is a great way to start redecorating your home. And you’ll find that with a little effort and forethought on your part, you will find discount home decor that will not only suit your budget but which will also look great in your home. And ultimately that’s all that really matters.
