How To Buy Garden Furniture On Line

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

Buying garden furniture on line is not the perfect solution as it both solves and presents some problems if it is used indiscriminately. For example, if you find it difficult to get around the shops and garden centres, the Internet will allow you to visit hundreds of places to contrast styles and prices, but you will not have had sight of your furniture and it might be expensive to return it.

Therefore there are a couple of items to watch out for if you want to buy garden furniture on line. Some of these tips will apply to other goods too particularly weighty items.

Be wary of shipping charges because some companies will strive to hide the fact that they can be horrendous. If delivery charges are an extra, do not forget to add these fees on to the cost of the garden furniture before you evaluate prices. Some businesses will talk some drivel about an order processing fee in an effort to cover up their shipping fees. These businesses are being insincere and you ought to avoid them like the plague.

Try to turn off to the words ‘discount’ and ‘sale price’ until you have added up all the costs and you have compared this total with the total cost of a comparable device. Likewise, be very wary of comparisons between list price and sale price. Manufacturers frequently ‘recommend’ a high list price purposely so that the retailer can offer a discount. It is very common practice, but designed to deceive.

Beware of ‘price snobbery’. If you see two retailers selling exactly the same items of garden furniture but at widely different prices, do not be automatically convinced that the cheaper one must be inferior. Instead, look around the cheap web site for extra costs. Do not forget that most retailers buy from the same manufacturers.

Do not trust any firm that says that they will not be beaten on price because they are the cheapest on the Internet or that they will undercut anyone you can prove is cheaper. They have no proof that they are the cheapest and if you prove that they are not they will decrease their price only to you because you caught them in their lie. These people are liars.

Firms that make a big issue out of quick service are not really giving you anything. Every company likes a fast turn-around because they can bank the check earlier and the warranty finishes sooner too. You will find out how decent their service is if you have difficulties. Empty promises and blowing one;s own trumpet mean nothing. Self praise is no praise.

You can check up on the company’s customer service record by keying the firm’s name, city of business and the word ‘issues’ or ‘problems’ into Google. You will soon be able to judge for yourself whether you are dealing with a reputable firm or not. Purchasing garden furniture on line is the same as buying anything else expensive on line: it is up to the buyer to beware before parting with his money because it may be difficult to get it back if there is a problem.

The Different Styles Of Garden Furniture

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

If you want to buy some new garden furniture, the first thing to do is think about the styles of garden furniture that would suit your garden and your preferences. If you already have an idea of what you want, you are already half way there, otherwise you will have to do some investigation on the different styles of garden furniture

This research can be done on line very easily by typing ‘garden furniture’ into Google, but if you would prefer more depth on the furniture, you could get a couple of magazines on gardening and landscaping. If you rather a more hands-on approach, you can go around the home improvement stores and the garden centres.

In fact, you will have to go to the shops sooner or later anyway unless you intend buying on line too. I personally like to do some research on the Internet first and then use the knowledge that I gleaned from there to make informed decisions in the store. I do not really trust the photos. I want to see and touch the garden furniture and check the joints and finish.

Once you get to the garden centre, you will discover various styles of garden furniture including: farmhouse or rustic, contemporary or modern, resort or poolside and these can be made from hardwood, softwood, plastic or metal.

Hardwood is by far the most popular material for garden furniture and most people prefer the farmhouse style, although there are some fantastic modern styles too.

No matter which style you prefer or what it is manufactured of the number one best piece of advice is to get the best quality that you can afford. This is true of most items you can buy, but I think that it is especially true of garden furniture because it will have a very hard life. Just imagine it: snow, rain, heat; temperatures varying from -5c to + 35c and varying humidity.

Cheap plastic cannot erect with those circumstances. I used to buy cheap plastic and needed to replace it every eighteen months. Then I bought expensive plastic and I still have some of that but in essence it only lasted three years. I have seen metal garden furniture and it always rusts, even if it is plastic coated, enamelled or painted. Softwood lasts well, but it will rot after approximately five years even if it is quite well taken care of.

The only garden furniture that I have ever had or seen at friends’ houses that lasts and looks beautiful all that time is hardwood. There is a wide selection of hardwoods. There are native hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple and beech and foreign hardwoods like mahogany and teak. These hardwoods can also be stained to virtually any colour although most people prefer the natural look.

Hardwood garden furniture is simple to maintain as well: just rub it over with linseed oil once or twice a year. If you carry out this simple maintenance procedure the timber will not dry out and it will resist the elements for twenty years or more ensuring that you get maximum value for money from this, the finest of all the styles of garden furniture.

Would You Recognize The Symptoms Of Dengue Fever?

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Dengue fever is caused by a virus that is transferred from person to person by the bite of a tiger striped mosquito. Dengue typically begins with high fever, chills, headache, pain behind the eyes, and joint and muscle pain making the person look flushed with a rash appearing around three to four days after the commencement of fever. The rash spreads to the rest of the body and shows up often as an inflammation of the lymph nodes.

Dengue, in its most prevalent form has an incubation period of about |five to eight days from the start of fever. It is worth noting that a person has fever for around four to seven days and it is usual for most people to get well without any major difficulties. However, long term effects and complications cannot be entirely ruled out in all instances, with some taking numerous months to recover and some having fatal recurrences.

This arises particularly in regions where dengue is endemic and there is the chance of repeated infections and relapses. The most serious of effects or complications are dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS).

Dengue hemorrhagic fever known as Hemorrhagic dengue, Dengue shock syndrome, Philippine hemorrhagic fever, Thai hemorrhagic fever or Singapore hemorrhagic fever can result in dengue shock syndrome and is fatal in about 1/20 cases that have a re-infection.

The severity of the effect of dengue in the form of dengue hemorrhagic fever rests in essence on one contracting another virus after building immunity to one particular sort of virus. The risk factors increase with having antibodies to dengue virus from a prior infection, being younger than 12, female, or Caucasian.

Look out for the effects of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the individual being not merely restless and irritable, but also becoming sweaty and acquiring shock-like symptoms. Minute spots of blood and bleeding could occur on the skin with substantial patches below the skin and negligible injuries causing severe bleeding. Some of the early indications that might be noticed are decreased appetite, fever, headache, joint pain, malaise, muscle pain, and vomiting.

Then you might notice more acute indications like restlessness followed by skin discoloration caused by the escape of blood into the tissues from burst blood vessels in mucous membranes particularly in the mouth. There could also be a sweeping rash followed by flat round spots caused by internal bleeding in the skin from the capillaries.

This dengue situation could worsen and show up as a shock-like state, cold clammy extremities, and sweatiness. A GP could examine the patient and find other indications like enlarged liver, reduced blood pressure, red eyes, swollen glands, and weak and rapid pulse.

The treatment might include a cure of the indications and a transfusion of fresh blood or platelets to right bleeding problems, IV fluids and electrolytes to right electrolyte imbalances and oxygen therapy for treating the unusually low blood oxygen level and hydration with intravenous (IV) fluids to treat dehydration. In addition, a stay in an intensive care environment is usually necessary.

It is imperative to approaching your medical professional in time during recurrent attacks and to make sure of personal hygiene and cleanliness at home and its surrounds. Using fully-covering clothing, mosquito nets, mosquito repellent with DEET and avoiding travel when mosquitoes are prevalent would help to control dengue.

Choosing Your Patio Garden Furniture

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Once you have finished making your patio, your deck or your lawn, you will unquestionably start thinking about how you can enjoy more time out of doors. Therefore, you will need some garden furniture. Many shops stock garden furniture. You can try home improvement centres, large department stores and garden centres. There are also businesses on line that will deliver. The hard job is picking your garden furniture.

There is a very broad range of designs of garden furniture – a style to suit every person and complement every garden. So, before hurrying down to the garden centre, it is worth thinking for a while what you would like to achieve with your open-air seating zone. Do you require a theme? Do you want to have company or dine there? Or do you just want to sit peacefully, enjoy your garden and read a book?

Indeed, the answer may well be a combination of all those variables. If you simply want to sit there with a drink and a book, you may be satisfied to just buy a couple of chairs and a small table, but if you want to have guests or take family meals outside, you may prefer a more substantial table. A large oak table would be quite costly, but it would look magnificent and last for a decade or more.

If you choose a table, you will have to have chairs to match, but do you want loungers as well? They could be of plastic and stored in the shed until wanted.

You will likely need some form of shade. This can be supplied by folding, even removable umbrellas or by overhanging trees or shrubs. Wisteria or clematis can do the task as well and cost you next to nothing.

Do you anticipate cooking in this area? If you do, what and how? Do you want a barbecue pit or a real hob and oven? A lot of people in areas where the climate allows are doing a lot of cooking outside in a carbon copy of an indoor kitchen, but without all the walls.. If you design the outdoor kitchen well, you will be able to use it in the rain too. I find it great not to have kitchen odours in the house and cooking outside is a good experience as well.

If it gets nippy in the evenings then you can think about buying some patio heaters. They are not expensive to buy or to run and one standard patio heater can keep quite a group of people warm. (By the word ‘standard’ here, I mean upright, like a lamp post).

Lighting is the last major consideration in the list when choosing garden furniture. There are actually two sorts of garden lighting to consider: lighting to see by and lighting to lure insects away. Again, you could use standard lamps to illuminate your patio. They cast their light far enough so that you can still look at your garden after dark or you could have separate wall light on dimmers.

The one light I would definitely have is a mosquito lantern. Hang this away from where you sit, because they do draw insects to them which they then electrocute with a pleasing zap.

Three Tips to a Healthy Lawn

Monday, May 30th, 2011

You have no idea what to do with that large expanse of lawn, because you’ve just bought your first house. You could also be someone who’s owned your home for awhile now, and over time the lawn isn’t looking quite as healthy. What can you do to rectify the situation?

A healthy lawn isn’t necessarily difficult to achieve, but it will take time. Caring properly for your lawn can enhance its appearance. There are some environmental benefits as an added bonus, as well. Your goals do have to be realistic, though. A professional lawn care company’s services may have you seeing more immediate results than if you decide to go it on your own.

If you haven’t yet actually done anything with your lawn, this is a great opportunity for you to develop healthy soil as a first step. If your soil is halfway between being heavy with clay and lighter and sandier, this is the best kind of soil in which to grow your lawn. No matter what type of soil you have, there are ways to make it improve. Consider adding compost, manure or grass clippings. These substances help lighter, sandier soil retain water and other essential nutrients while helping lighten heavier soil. You should choose a type of grass that will thrive in the specific climate where you’re located.

Second, while mowing, make sure your lawn mower’s blades are sharp and that you don’t cut your grass too short. This ensures production of stronger and healthier grass. It also reduces the possibility of pest problems. Longer grass with more surface area takes in more sunlight. It also grows more deeply into the soil at the roots which helps it survive. The ideal length of your grass varies with its type, but most grass is healthiest between two and a half and three and a half inches. Additionally, mowing grass with sharp blades is ideal. If your lawn mower’s blades are dull, it risks tearing or injuring the grass. This, in turn, affects its growth and overall health.

Third, proper and regular watering also helps grass grow deeper, stronger roots. Most people tend to water their lawns too often, but without enough water to create the positive effect you want. Instead, watering less often but more deeply is ultimately the way to go.

Three simple tips and before you know it, your lawn will be looking gorgeous and healthy. You must also remember that cultivating a lawn’s health does not happen overnight. You will be unlikely to be disappointed with the end result if you set realistic goals for yourself.

Mosquito Repellent Plants

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Those small, maddening creatures, mosquitoes, have always made us run for our lives because they are thought to be carriers of diseases from person to person, animal to animal and from human to animals. How true it is that in Africa alone mosquitoes that kill one child below the age of 5 each thirty seconds, are the main cause of infection and account for the greatest number of deaths all over the world.

The application of mosquito repellents in the form of mosquito coils, electronic mosquito repellents, mosquito repellent creams, herbal mosquito lotions and plants help keep mosquitoes away. In addition, insecticides sprayed on flowers could also help.

However some people could become allergic to these ways and suffer from problems of the skin, nasal cavity and throat. So it is highly advisable and environmentally friendly to consider plants to repel mosquitoes.

Citronella, a plant that grows to a height of 2 feet, gives an annual bloom of lavender color flowers and finds its place as one of the most well-known mosquitoes repelling plants . You could find these plants mostly in places of warm weather. The oil of the citronella plant is utilized in scents and other herbal products due to their mosquito repelling quality.

If you love raising marigold of the African or French variety in your garden, you have a mosquito repellent just in your backyard. Marigolds, growing to the height of between six inches and three feet, grow well in sunny climates and hates the shade because it slows its growth process. The marigold plant of both the French and African varieties are able to repel mosquitoes because of the peculiar smell that they possess.

Rosemary, a shrub that grows up to 4 to five feet high, is a highly-rated mosquito repellent. This shrub grows larger than others and has blue flowers. Rosemary, a drought resistant shrub is also used in many fish recipes as a herb.

In addition, green lemon grass acts as a strong mosquito repellent, because of the citronella oil contained in it. This perennial plant of India and Thailand grows up to a couple of feet high, provides us with lemon grass oil and acts as a pesticide and preservative. The tea manufactured out of lemon grass proves to get very refreshing.

Lavender, the beautiful purple colored plant, not only increases the attractiveness of your backyard, but also repels mosquitoes. This plant is a gardener?s favourite. It grows to a height of four feet, and needs warm weather. The flowers of this plant also find use in bouquets and lavender oil is extracted from it.

Catnip and horse mint, both belonging to the mint family prove to make powerful mosquito repellents. Catnip oil made from the catnip plant and horse mint with pink bloom also serves as a mosquito repellent.

Garlic the wonder vegetable that is used in recipes also repels mosquitoes. The strong smell of bulbs of garlic assists to stave off mosquitoes. In addition, herbs like basil, penny royal, and ageratum are also known for their mosquito repelling qualities.

Therefore there is no need to feel that these little insects can annoy you at their leisure and take control of your life. You can take control of their life without using chemical smells or using costly electronic devices. It is true that planting mosquito repellent herbs also makes for a good-looking garden.

Repel Those Mosquitoes In More Ways Than One

Friday, May 20th, 2011

As much as we love the warmer months of the year, there is one thing we do not look forward to: Mosquitoes. Oh yes, these insects are not friendly at all. They carry more than one sort of disease. Yes, these lightweight insects, which float in the air around us, pick up numerous illnesses from who knows where, will leave red, itchy marks on your body.

As Spring time and Summer time roll on, it is lovely to have doors and windows open, but it is also vital to have screens fitted for a home’s doors and windows. These screens are especially necessary when it comes to opening up your home in the warmer months. Having these screens for doors and windows have been the best invention for keeping mosquitoes outdoors.

Once outside though, Mosquitoes will be zooming into you. Well, onto your skin more specifically. There are well over 300 scents that mosquitoes are drawn to and most of these scents are from human skin. For human beings to live, we need to exhale carbon dioxide.

Well, this is one thing Mosquitoes are attracted to. Yes, as soon as anybody exhales carbon dioxide, Mosquitoes are more likely than not, to make a b-line for your body. When eating outdoors, mosquitoes are going to want not only you, but your food too.

They, like human beings, like salty foodstuffs. Foods rich in sodium are also filled with lactic acid. One more thing which attracts mosquitoes to human skin is body heat and if drinking alcohol, that too attracts these pests.

Okay, so now you are wondering what you can do to fend off these pests. There are several ways that you can use to repel them from your skin. If you are looking for something natural to repel any and all mosquitoes, try adding more garlic to your daily food intake. For some reason, garlic reduces the attractiveness of our skin.

Now, you do not have to quite consume garlic, but instead take garlic supplements, along with B complex and vitamin B1 supplements. Adjusting your daily diet, by taking a few supplements, particularly in the hot summer months, will repel these unwanted insects.

Now, if using natural products is not the path for you, there are lots of chemical products on the market. Let?s see, anyone who is not a lover of mosquitoes, can go to their local grocery store and look for such mosquito repellents as DEET, Oils and Electronic Repellents.

DEET is made from such ingredients I can not even pronounce, but is mainly sold in solid or liquid form and is highly poisonous. If this does not sound healthy to you, there are various oils which can be placed on your patio table or wherever you sit outside.

Some of the more commonly used oils are botanically based like Citronella, Eucalyptus Oil and Soybean Oil. Obviously, anything botanically, is considered natural or organic and while used as suggested, will not harm the human body.

Electronic mosquito repellents have been used for a while now. In fact, they are used in the desert, such as the Middle East, by American Soldiers. These electronic devices are manufactured with chemical pheromones to attract them and electrified wires to immediately electrocutes these disgusting insects.

These days, there are also mosquito repellents which you can clip onto your clothing. This type of repellent permits the user to be free of mosquitoes for 120 hours and repels them from 15 feet away. This absolutely is one amazing, personal, repellent on the market today.

Planning The Landscaping Of Your Garden

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Landscaping techniques allow the gardener to transform a simple backyard into a lovely garden. There are many routes to having a stunning garden, because there are many types to select from and there are different tastes too. Each to his own. Some styles of garden require a great deal of looking after and others less so, but even a slabbed or concrete backyard requires some looking after.

The best way of going about making something lovely out of your backyard is planning and perhaps the simplest way of planning is to create a plan or a drawing of your garden.

If you choose this route, the first thing you will need to do is get some graph paper and plot the exact size and form of your garden onto it, with as large a scale as will fit on the sheet of graph paper.

After you have completed that, mark in unmovable items like a brick shed, a drain or septic tank, a fish pond and doorways et cetera. Then you should photocopy it, maybe five or ten times. This is so that you can make mistakes, change your mind or even permit everybody in the household to make their own design from their own investigations and imagination.

If you consider that this is beyond your skills, you are almost certainly wrong. It really is not difficult, kids draw on graph paper all the time in maths classes. Anyway, if you do not want to do it this way, then you will have to rely on ideas cut out of journals.

So, collect all your ideas from magazines and put them in a file. Likewise, if you are making a plan on paper, collect your ideas in a folder, but also mark them on your graph paper.

Set yourself or your team a deadline of say, a two weeks or a month, but you do need to do the majority of your work in the spring or the summer, when the weather is warm. On the appointed day, get together and amalgamate all your plans into one.

Put all the redundant material apart and forget about it. Do not over complicate the matter by having all the designs in the active file. Now you are prepared to go to work and instigate the plans.

The choice is now whether you do the work yourself or whether you get a builder in. A builder will have experience, and so will be able to get the job done quickly. They will also be able to offer practical suggestions, if what you want to achieve is difficult. The other side of the coin is that it is a lot more expensive.

If you choose to do it yourself, you may find it a good idea to split your plan into sections. It could be completed in quarters of the garden at a time, if that is practicable, or you could do all the groundwork first, followed by the brick and blockwork, then the pond etc. Depending on your diagram. The only thing that really has to be done last is the planting of the plants

The Best Way To Buy Cheap Garden Furniture

Friday, April 29th, 2011

If you like being in your garden and want a set of garden furniture in order to take advantage of the lovely summer weather, it can be rather depressing when you go out to look at the prices of garden furniture, particularly if you are on a budget. And who is not on a budget these days? However, there is a way to buy cheap garden furniture and still end up with something that you can be proud of.

I would like you to be very wary of lies. I have just finished reading an advert offering an ‘authentic teak (garden furniture) set’ that normally sells for about $4,500 for $29.97! Anyone that believes this sort of rubbish is a sad case indeed. Later on in the advert, they admit that the wood is not teak, but is ‘constructed of hardwoods comparable to teak’.

In fact, I do not believe that either. The writer has already told one lie and so is obviously deceitful. If ever you find a hole in someone’s advertising you ought to look elsewhere, especially on the Internet and particularly if the shop is not in your town so that you cannot go and visit it.

Unfortunately, there are lots of liars on the Internet and they are giving the honest traders a bad reputation. Many of them live in poor countries that have little or no Internet or business regulation. Places like Eastern Europe, China, Africa, South America and South-Eastern Asia.

If the standard of English in the advert is poor, go elsewhere. It is a pity for the honest person who does not speak English well, but much safer for you. Another check would be to send the proprietor an email.

If they do not respond, give them a wide birth. If they do respond, check their Internet Provider’s (IP) address. The IP address is a group of four numbers and the first group gives the country of origin of the email.

Be very careful of offers that appear to be too good to be true. Rich people buy teak patio furniture at $4,500. Why do they pay that amount? Because the best teak furniture costs that much. How can rich people afford that much? Because they have decent jobs. How do they get decent jobs? Because they are not stupid. If you could buy genuine teak furniture for $29.97, they would buy it as well.

So, if you can only afford to buy cheap garden furniture, buy the best quality plastic furniture that you can find and do not get sucked in by these conmen that are trying to trick you that you can have a top of the market hardwood garden furniture set for $30. You cannot; and never will be able to; and probably never have been able to either.

Simple Ideas For All Kitchens

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Is your kitchen a dull and boring area to work in? It does not need to be like that, you can change it fairly easily either yourself or by getting in professionals to accomplish it for you. The trick is to know what you desire before you take a sledge hammer to your existing kitchen.

So, before you go about destroying what you already have, go about gathering ideas for replacement. You can get great ideas from the home restoration TV programmes, from home design journals, by looking at friends’ kitchens and by reading my suggestions below.

Maybe the best place to start is to think about how to reveal your own personal style. This could be a broad trend like farmhouse, Tuscan, Mexican, modern, or it could be a little bit of many styles to make up your own. However, do not forget that there is a lot of scope to express your own individuality even if you choose a broad style.

One trap to avoid is attempting to get all the latest gadgets from a broad style. For example, if you follow the modern broad trend to its logical end, your kitchen will look like a cold, clinical hotel or hospital kitchen full of stainless steel. If you like all that kind of equipment , then okay, but it is uncomfortable for a family to feel at home in.

If money is short, you could just repaint the cabinets a different colour and replace the handles. That will make a huge difference. Changing the background lighting is another pretty cheap way of varying the accent of your kitchen. Install subtle lighting under the wall cabinets and if you already have those, try adding some spot lights to the ceiling and if you already have those, try using some wall sconces for candles.

If you have beautiful pots and pans or want to get a set, why not show them off by fixing a rack to the wall from which to hang your pots and pans? it adds a very interesting effect to any kitchen.

You can also make a huge change to the kitchen (or any room for that matter) by altering the flooring. Solid wood is gorgeous, but if you cannot afford that, you could try veneered floor covering or stone, if the floor will take the weight. It is a good idea to endeavor to use the kitchen flooring to reinforce the broad image of your kitchen’s new style.

If you do not already have one, think about creating an outdoor kitchen for use when the weather permits. An outdoor kitchen certainly frees up a lot of room and ‘usage’. People flow to the outdoor kitchen when the weather is bright and your indoor living space suddenly seems less cluttered.

Last, but not least, the kitchen table. Just changing the style or shape of your kitchen table will have a big impact on the general look of your kitchen. Go from wood to glass or from square to round.
