Formula D Racing

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Unless you are a fan of racing cars, there is a decent chance that you have not heard of Formula D Racing. Formula D has its adherents naturally, yet it is still not as widely known as the other forms of racing like Formula One, Drag Car Racing, NASCAR or Cross Country Rallying. This is partially because it is a pretty new kind of car racing.

Every year the national television coverage is a bit more extensive, yet it is taking a long time to prise some of the airtime away from the more traditional sports. Once you have seen a competition though, the likelihood is that you will become hooked on this exciting sport that they have Christened Formula D.

The ‘D’ in Formula D stands for ‘drifting’ which is another name given to the sport. Drifting refers to the angle of the car with reference to the sides of the road at any given moment. Drifting around bends permits the car to maintain its highest possible speed in a bend. Drifting sounds natural and therefore commonplace, but it is actually very difficult to do well.

Drifting takes skill and plenty of practice. Drivers are judged in part on their talent at drifting. There are in fact two facets of Formula D or two sorts of drifting. There are the traditional style qualifying runs but there are also tandem battles. Qualifying runs involve the driver racing solo flat out against the clock, drifting as necessary to maintain the highest speed possible.

However, tandem runs involve two car drivers who are being judged on their skills at outwitting the other driver. The judges are looking for the line of drift, the speed of the cars, overtaking, crashes and much more. Driving in the tandem runs definitely sorts the men out from the boys.

Formula Drifting grew up a little haphazardly, yet there have been serious attempts to regulate it. At the moment the Formula Drift Championship is the only professional drifting championship that is sanctioned by SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) Pro Racing in the United States, although there are frequently amateur local drifting bouts held unofficially.

There needs to be more officially authorized races so that standards are maintained and each driver follows the same set of rules. This is the only way that the TV stations will pick up on drifting and help promote it more. Drifting is new to the United States, yet the first Drifting Races took place in 2004, so not all that long ago anyway. It is still very much a modern sport.

At the moment the country where Formula D is most well-liked is Japan, yet that is likely to change once the American media gets to grips with Drifting. At the moment it is still not that easy to watch drifting events unless you live in California, Washington, Georgia and New Jersey and it is still not simple to watch it on TV unless you have G4TechTV, which is commonly referred to as G4.

Purchasing A Hot Tub

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

For most individuals, purchasing a hot tub spa, also known as a gazebo, a hot spa or a Jacuzzi, is a first time event. This makes it quite a daunting undertaking, because they are not cheap and there are numerous variables.

You have to do research on the different types of jets, the power of the pump that is best for you, the location, whether to install a deck around it or not et cetera, et cetera. In this piece, we will take a look at a few of these points to make buying a hot tub easier for you.

The first thing to think about is size. This usually depends on two items: where you are going to put the hot tub and how many individuals are going to be using it at a time. If you are hoping to put it above the ground floor inside your home, you will have to check the weight of the spa while it is full of water and people to see whether your floor will take that weight without reinforcement. If the climate is decent where you live, the garden is the best place to put it.

The next deliberation is price. There is a vast choice of hot tubs and a wide span of prices too. If you find that the price of a new hot tub is just out of your range, what about purchasing a second hand one?

There is rather a substantial second hand market in Jacuzzis because hotels, health spas and some home owners have to renew their models. You might be lucky enough to find quite a plush second hand model for less than the price of a new cheap one. Enquire at a local installer’s for details.

The next consideration is the material that the actual tub is manufactured from. This is not inevitably the same as the housing or cabinet that surrounds the tub. Traditional-style hot tubs are made from local hardwoods such as cedar, oak, redwood or teak, but they are weighty and leak a bit.

Modern materials used are a mixture of plastic and fibreglass moulded into comfortable seating arrangements. They are lighter and do not leak (or ought not to).

Then you can think about the housing. Is the hot tub spa going to be on its own somewhere or is it going to be built in? if you are going to build it in, what are you going to build it into? A deck? Hardwood, softwood, concrete and tiles?

Then there is the general maintenance of the tub. This is not difficult but it is essential, so when you are building your tub into something, remember that you will need access to various parts of it. Read the manual of the tub that you buy to learn which parts will need maintenance and cleaning.

Usually, this involves cleaning the jets, adding chemicals to the water, renewing filters and maybe changing a gasket on the pump, which could be assigned to an engineer in an annual service deal.

Day Spas And What They Offer

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Are you feeling a bit jaded? A bit run-down or even worn out? Do you feel like you need a holiday, but you do not have the time or do not have the money right now? Well, a trip to a day spa might be the answer. Most women have been to a beauty salon and so have some men, but fewer people of both sexes have been to a day spa.

A day spa is an extended version of a beauty salon. The extra amenities usually involve water in some way or oil – something liquid. However, day spas resemble beauty salons in that they usually offer all of the treatments that a beauty salon offers and pampering is the prime object.

It is the pampering as much as anything that can wash your cares away for a while and make you feel as if you have just come back from a short vacation. Four hours at a day spa can be more relaxing (and far better for you) than a weekend away on the razzle.

If you have never been to a spa before, it is worth doing a local search on the Internet and seeing what web sites come up. A decent web site ought to list the treatments that they offer, their prices and any special offers (frequently known as day packages). It ought to also mention whether you have to book up or merely call in.

The prices may appear outrageous at first, but it is worth checking how long the procedure takes and whether there are any special preparations or oils involved, because they may be costly. Day packages can reduce the price of a number of related treatments quite significantly. If you still find it costly, maybe you could plan a visit for a couple of weeks in advance.

Something else that you should factor in while thinking about day spas and costs is the tranquility. Most spas have strict rules concerning noise. So, no small children, no shouting, no cell phones or pagers, no radios or Walkmen, just soothing background music. Everything in a day spa is meant to make you feel pampered, cared for, less stressed and much more relaxed.

So what services can you expect to find at a day spa? Well, everything that you would expect to find at a beauty salon for a start off, so that includes manicure, pedicures, hair styling, facials and make-up or make-overs.

However, a spa ought to also supply massages of various types like a full body massage, an oil massage, a Thai massage, a foot massage and maybe others too. They might also have a steam box or a sauna and / or Turkish Baths, mud wraps, herbal wraps, mud baths and even flotation chambers. Many spas provide aroma therapy and offer complimentary healthy drinks like fruit and vegetable juices too. Some may even have a swimming pool as well.

Detoxes feature quite highly at most spas and some might offer colonic irrigation as well. However, the best value for money are the day packages or one-off specials, which permit you to combine several treatments for one discounted payment.

The Wonders Of Hot Tubs And Jacuzzis

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

It is lovely to soak in a hot tub, is it not? After a long day at the hamster wheel or sorting the family out – driving the kids to and from school and then to the scouts, sports club or music lessons. Being stuck in traffic on the way home or waiting in the queue at the supermarket, a long soak in a hot tub helps wash it all away.

Consider then what a hot tub spa or Jacuzzi could do? Lazing in a hot spa tub with a long cool drink whilst six jets are blasting hot water and bubbles at you, massaging you gently, taking the stresses of the day away.

You could have one in the garden or in the bathroom. You could even get a portable hot spa tub and move it into the garden in the summer and back inside in the winter. If you ask most people what they would like to have in the manner of home improvement, a swimming pool would almost certainly be number one and a hot spa tub number two.

There again, a lot of people do not have the room for a swimming pool and a Jacuzzi is a lot cheaper than a swimming pool as well. Water has a calming effect on individuals. Maybe it is a primeval memory of when we came out of the sea millions of years ago or maybe it is a more recent memory of being in the womb.

Whatever the reason or even mixture of reasons, people like to be in, around or on water, it relaxes and revitalizes us. And frothing, bubbling water is even more soothing and even more revitalizing. Hence the popularity of hot tub spas.

Another reason might be gravity. All day long we are lumbering about, each foot step sending shock waves into our body and gravity pulling down on so that we feel every ounce of our weight, but as soon as we are in water, we are buoyed up and the effects of our weight and of gravity are felt far less.

In fact, up to 30% less. Additionally, we are ninety-odd percent water, so no surprise we feel tranquil in a hot tub. But that is not all that a soak in a hot tub does. It warms you right through, through to the marrow and that relieves minor aches and pains. The reduction in gravity is also said to be a relief to sufferers of arthritis.

There are possibly other reasons as well why individuals feel more relaxed in a tub of hot water, especially a whirlpool type spa tub, but one for me is that I will not get out of the tub for anything except to get another drink. Once I am in there, I do not care if the phone rings or the door bell chimes. The house would have to be on fire to get be me out before my skin looks like a wrinkled old prune.

How To Keep Mosquitoes At Bay

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

If you like to sit outdoors in the summer, you almost certainly have a bit of a garden, patio or deck that you like to relax on of a summer’s evening. With a few flowers for colour and perfume, it makes an ideal location to relax. Add a water feature and a cold drink and I am in my element.

That is until five or six o’ clock, at which time the light starts to fade and the mosquitoes come out. They spoil it for me or at least they used to until I found neat little tricks to hold the mosquitoes at bay – out of my yard and into someone else’s. Not that I wish mosquitoes on my friends, but they will go somewhere else, if they do not come to me.

The first thing to do is learn a bit about the mosquito. Mosquitoes are not really very strong fliers and they are easily damaged and easily blown off course. Therefore, most of the mosquitoes you meet in your garden were born there. Some people say tht mosquitoes do not travel over a few metres from where they were born.

They like to lay their eggs in still water and it need not be that much. Millions of mosquitoes are born in still water that collects in the leaves of living plants. Now, I am not recommending that you cut all your plants down, but you did ought to clean up any old junk in the garden that can retain water.

You can fill in holes and indentations in paths, stow away watering cans and unused flower pots, clean blocked gutters, clear away fallen leaves and maybe think about the flowers that you are buying next time you are in the garden centre. If you have a water feature, make sure that there are fish in it that eat insects – some do not.

The next thing to do is find out which plants mosquitoes do not like and they do have their preferences, the same like we do. Mosquitoes hate anything that smells of lemons. So, you can plant, lemon balm, citronella, lemon trees, lemon grass and anything else that smells lemony.

If the plants can not quite produce enough lemon smell some evenings, you can supplement them with lemon-scented candles or citronella oil rubbed straight onto your skin. It is a perfectly natural oil, so should not injure you, your children or your pets. Dogs suffer from mosquitoes as much as we do.

As mentioned above, mosquitoes are not robust fliers, so a good fan, normally kills hundreds of them a night by blowing them against walls and the fan’s blades. A favourite of mine on a bad night, is a mosquito trap.

One that has highly-charged electrical wiring behind an alluring ultra-violet light, the sound of them crackling away on the electrified wire is very enjoyable and extremely effective

One mosquito trap can clear a whole garden, but my all-time favourite is the tennis racquet type bug-zapper, the one that looks like a child’s tennis racquet. Anything that gets past your defences, is a certain gonner, if you have a racquet bug zapper

How About A Costa Rican Health Spa Or Retreat?

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Have you ever thought about getting away from it all and going on a colossal detox mission? There is a lot to be said for giving your body a break from all the pollution, smoke, noise, fast-paced lifestyle and stress and the substances that we use to deal with that stress like alcohol, tobacco, coffee and worse. It is not so bad while your body is young, but as it gets older, it becomes less capable of countering all the stuff we give it to handle.

Costa Rica may sound like a long way to go to visit a spa or health resort, but it is just a flight away. The reason for choosing Costa Rica is because it is like a home from home for Americans, but the ambiance is a great deal slower and more easy-going. There are lots of health spas and retreats to pick from in Costa Rica and a brief search on the Net will reveal lots of them.

Spanish is the foremost local language, but English is spoken by more than ten percent of the adult populace and tourist facilities are well developed in the form of exchanging currencies, restaurants and hotels. The country is unpolluted and environmentally friendly.

For example, according to Wikipedia, Costa Rica is ranked third in the world and first among the Americas in terms of the 2010 Environmental Performance Index and in 2007, the government announced that it intended for Costa Rica to be the first carbon neutral country by 2021. Furthermore, the Happy Planet Index ranks Costa Rica as number one in the world and also as the “greenest country in the world”.

Where better could you go to escape pollution and stress than a health spa or retreat in such a country? Many of the resorts offer stress reducing schemes that include methods of relaxation such as yoga, meditation, reiki, massage and tai-chi, although there are lots of places offering water sports such as diving, sailing and surfing. There is fantastic diving to be had in warm, clear water, which is teaming with flora and fauna.

Prices are low when likened with the United States. You can get a hotel or a room in a retreat for $25-$50 and up and a good meal will cost $2-$4. There are all types of food but especially the types of food associated with Spanish and American cuisine. Vegetarians are well catered for too and there is fish and other seafood in abundance for those who rather it to meat.

Some of the health spa resorts have accommodation for you to stay in while others offer just day time courses. The retreat style resorts are live-in and many resemble communes. The facilities vary from being ‘hippyish’ and pretty basic in some of the retreats to being as modern as anywhere in the world in the health spas, offering swimming pools, gymnasiums and hot tub spas.

All in all, if you are considering going abroad for a healthy, restful break, a holiday in Costa Rica should be on your short list.

Deep Sea Diving: Knowing Your Tides

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

It might sound strange but a thorough understanding of the tides and their result on your fishing locale can pay big rewards. In fact, it is considered a major key to successful deep sea fishing by experts. Most fishing guides and charter-boat captains know this secret. They make close studies of currents, tides, and how they have an effect on fishing on their area.

However, it is sad to say, that a lot of amateur deep sea anglers give very little thought to these important details. In deed, some anglers do not pay any attention to them at all. Then they ask themselves why other fishermen catch all the fish and they do not. Nevertheless, there are those who do comprehend that tides have an effect on their fishing, but they do not know exactly how or why.

These anglers frequently waste hours trolling, casting and sinker bouncing even when the tide is not right. However, the deep sea angler who knows his tides can select in advanced the most favourable fishing times and concentrate his efforts on those times, which means that you can have fewer wasted days and get more fish during your deep sea fishing trips.

We do not have to delve into the science of tides here, except to point out that tides are due to the gravitational forces that are brought about by the Sun and the moon. Since the moon is nearer the Earth, it has more influence on tides than the Sun.

When the tide is up, water moves towards the land. This is also known as a “flood tide”. When the tide drops, making its way back out, it is called an “ebb tide”. The period when it does not move either way is termed the “slack tide”. It takes a period of about six hours for it to rise, and six hours to ebb. For every 24 hours these tides occur about 50 minutes later than the last time.

They also fluctuate with regard to the level that they rise or fall. The highest tides occur when the Sn and moon are located on the same side of the Earth in a direct line. This kind of tide is called a “Spring tide”, which happens during new-moon and full-moon periods.

During these periods, both low and high tides are higher than their customary state. However, during the last and first quarter phases of the moon, tides do not rise or fall that much. These are called as “neap tides”.

So which of these tides are helpful and which are not? To start off with, most experts believe that flowing tides or currents are usually more productive than when there are no currents or tides. Therefore, a “slack” tide will rarely generate a good catch.

You can take even more help from tides by knowing when to go. The time in which an incoming tide begins is rated one of the most productive periods for fishing, particularly if you are targeting game fish like bluefish, striped bass, channel bass, and weakfish.

During the periods of slack water, small bait fish are apt to scatter, and having a lack of strong currents to contend with, they are able to swim faster and therefore escape their predators.

However, when tides start moving, such small bait fish are at the mercy of strong rips and current. Therefore, they are easier to find and catch for stripers and other kinds of game fish. When an outgoing tide begins is another good time to fish, simply for the same logic. In general, the change of tide, whether it be low or high, is really the best time to do your fishing.

Animals, Fleas, Ticks And Worms

Monday, April 9th, 2012

Fleas and other parasites have always to be awarded the top priority by dog owners. The all too common incidences of flea bite allergy in the case of dogs causes worry to many dog owners every year. This is because flea bites can cause allergic reactions in the area bitten by the fleas. In these cases, the affected area becomes hairless due to the dog scratching itself vigorously.

Heavy flea infestations can cause severe dermatitis in dogs, because the dog will scratch and scratch the area until he bleeds and can also introduce infection. If the flea bites cause an allergic reaction or even dermatitis in your dog, he/she really ought to be taken to the veterinary doctor as soon as possible, because usually, the dog will be suffering extreme discomfort by this time.

The vet will sell you a cream to soothe the itching and reduce the inflammation and some powder or a spray to kill the fleas. Prevention, however, is better than cure and medicated collars are available to treat and prevent an infestation of external blood-suckers like ticks and fleas.

Besides fleas, other parasites like ticks and lice in addition to the internal parasites like hook worms, round worms, whip worms etc. can affect the health of your dog. For instance, if hookworm infects a dog, that dog will usually suffer from anaemia. The signs of anaemia become more evident depending on the degree of infection by the hookworm.

Hookworm larvae can pass directly through the skin and cause problems inside the affected dogs. Such dogs may have cuts due to dermatitis on the paws and on the skin. Frequently, skin rashes are the result in such cases and the affected animal passes loose stools, which are tinged red with blood.

Nearly all dogs and definitely all puppies will have round worms at some time, which is why dogs can sometimes be seen rubbing their bottoms along the floor. However, if round worms are present in very large numbers, infected puppies show a pot belly, which is easily noticeable by the dog’s owners themselves. This can result in malnutrition and even death. A dose of piperazine salts is given orally for the cure of this condition. However, broad-spectrum anthelmintics like pyrantel pamoate, fenbendazole etc. will also cure this very common condition.

Lately, many drugs have come onto the market to treat fleas and other parasites. Nowadays, the medical agent called ivermectin is highly preferred by many dog owners to treat fleas and other parasites in dogs. This drug is available in injection form and oral form. The drug is available for external application also.

Preparing Your Fish Pond For Storms

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

It does not matter where you live, I am sure that you experience storms at some time of the year. In the north of the northern hemisphere, we are inclined to get lots of rain in winter and spring. In the tropics, there may be monsoons. Whatever you call them, they give off lots of wind and lots of rain in a short space of time – it is basically a storm.

The fact is that, if you know that a storm is approaching, you can take safety measures and save your precious fish, whether they are expensive or just dear to you. It might be useful to distinguish between minor and major storms, but that is only helpful if you can trust your weather announcer.

Minor Storms: the first thing to do is to stop feeding your fish, if you have enough notice of the storm. Fish can easily live for weeks on the insects and plant life in the water, so do not be concerned. The reason for stopping feeding is that if the storm damages your filtration system, the quality of the pond water will not deteriorate so much, if there is no uneaten food in it.

Remove some of the water to allow for the rainfall, but do a partial water change too, because otherwise the reduced water level will contain higher levels of impurities until the rain arrives.

Remove items from the vicinity that can blow over and fall into your pond. It is a good idea to put a net over the pond to prevent debris being blown into it too. Flying twigs or branches could alarm or even spear your fish.

Major Storms: we are not talking about hurricanes here. If a hurricane threatens to hit, you ought to evacuate your fish to a temporary tank somewhere safe – maybe a 50 gallon barrel in the basement or something like that.

If you want to be completely certain that your fish will be alright, you could ask your local pet shop to take them away to look after them otherwise proceed as for a minor storm but with the following extra safety measures.

Disconnect all the electrical equipment in and around your fish pond. Make certain that there is no way that a live wire can fall into the pond and electrocute your fish. Remove all the plants from your pond as they could be damaged by the wind and waves, but leave any stone hiding places that your fish will surely look for while the storm is blowing. If you think that maybe you do not have enough ‘caves’, erect some provisional ones from bricks or blocks.

Put a double layer of netting over your pond and tie it lower down than normal, say only a few inches above the water line, but not so low that if a fish gets out, it cannot get back in. Lastly, build a wall of sand bags at least two feet high all the way around your pond. This will allow the water to get in and drain away, without taking your fish with it, which is why the net must be high enough to allow the fish to get back into the pond.

Just What Is Entomology?

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Entomology at its most simple is the study of insects and related animals. It is a subsection of biology and zoology. The animal class of Insecta is by far the largest group of animals in the world.

To give you an notion of how big the issue is and how much work there is yet to be done, a bit more than a million insects have been classified, but it is estimated that there are 30,000,000 more species to classify.

Many of these insects do not even have names yet and the habits of lots of those with names is still a complete mystery. This part of the study of entomology: the study of insects’ relationship with humans, the environment and other plants and animals is vital work.

This means that entomology has an effect on agriculture, biology, chemistry, criminology, forensic science, ecology, economics, food, forestry, genetics, health, trade, pharmaceuticals, robotics and veterinary medicine just for a kick off!

This means that there are many kinds of jobs in which a knowledge of entomology plays a useful role. For instance, if you are interested in insects and computers, you could develop computer programs for farmers to help them plan for all sorts of situations from attacks by pests to pollination by bees.

If you like to be in the field, you could work in forestry. If you like chemistry, you could work on chemicals like insect repellents

If you like maths, you could work on statistics, insect populations, growth predictions etc. In other areas you could work on the genetic engineering of plants to resist insect attack; work in a zoo rearing and feeding insects both for food for other animals and as specimens or work in scenes of crimes using the insect life on a dead body to help supply proof for an investigation.

With so many kinds of careers on offer, it is easy to find a branch of entomology to interest you. There is also a boundless supply of specimens – there are approximately 1,600,000,000 insects on the planet for each human being and there is no kind of terrestrial life on the planet that does not rely on insects for its existence. It is also the most diverse life form on the planet.

A colossal problem that is growing year on year is the shortage of food, yet it is likely that 40% of all food produced is either consumed or spoiled by insects. If that single problem could be solved, it would give us a breathing space to work out the problem in the right manner. It is obvious that entomology will play a pivotal role in solving this difficulty.

Entomologists have a great deal of work to do in safeguarding the environment and one of the most multifaceted environments is the rain forest. Approximately half the world’s species of plants and animals are discovered just in rain forests.

Lots of of these species have not been classified and they may hold the keys to curing a lot of of the most lethal illnesses affecting mankind today.

A century ago, the diseases that killed most individuals worldwide were not the ones that we confront now and that is largely because entomologists learned the insects that spread the virus (mosquitoes, ticks and fleas) and learned how to control them.

Nowhere near as many individuals die nowadays from malaria, Yellow Fever and dengue as they did 100 years ago, because we know how to control mosquito populations and individuals realize that it is the mosquito spreading the illnesses.

These are the life-threatening diseases, but think about how much money we spend protecting our pets and livestock. And how much do individuals spend on killing cockroaches, silverfish and bed bugs?

There is a huge amount of money being spent on insects so lots of jobs are out there for those with an interest in bugs.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article writes on many topics, but is at present concerned with getting rid of mosquito bites. If you would like to know more just go to our website at Mosquito Bite Swellings.
