Celtic Tattoos

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

The Celts are an ancient people, who almost certainly came from India many thousands of years ago. After getting to Italy, they made their way north-east through France to the United Kingdom. The Gauls were dominant in France by the time the Romans got there a little more than two thousand years ago, but the Celts were rock-solid in the UK.

In those days, the Celts lived all around the UK, but the Roman invasion pushed them back into the extremities of the land. As the Romans defeated the Celts in south-east Britain, the tribes either moved to Scotland or Wales or they mixed with the Roman invaders.

British Celts were well-known for their skin modifications, which is the modern terminology for tattoos and body art. The Celts and the Picts were body painters extraodinnaire. However, that was before Christianity. After Christianity came to the UK, the Celtic Cross became an vital symbol of Celtic symbology.

However, there are other Celtic symbols as well. The Welsh dragon is a Celtic symbol too. The Celts believed in fairies, so fairies are also Celtic symbols. The legends of King Arthur and the knights of the round table are also Celtic, as is Avalon and Camelot, no matter what the English tell you.

Ireland is also a prominent Celtic country and numerous Celtic symbols come from there as well, The famous Claddagh Ring is a typical Celtic design – the never-ending strings or ropes of time. Druids are also a powerful symbol of Celtic culture and the druids held oak trees in high esteem.

Retro is a big thing in modern fashion as people are beginning to disbelieve the myth that times will always be better. Young people are searching back for a restarting point, but as that is hard to find, they are picking up on symbols of their history. For lots of people of British origin, this is Celtic.

For others, it is just the romanticism of Celtic folklore. The Mabignogion, fairies, druids, dragons, King Arthur and the knights of the round table are all powerful images in peoples’ subconscious. People like to fantasise about the supernatural in these days of the cold, calculating computers, which govern our lives.

If you want to have a Celtic tattoo, you are almost certainly of Celtic descent and so you will already have a concept of the sort of tattoo that you want to have. It may be a decent idea to look for a tattoo artist who has knowledge of Celtic traditions and Celtic tattoos. This way, you may be more certain of the authenticity of your tattoo, if you are not au fe with Celtic images or tattoos.

Celtic tattoos could be classed as tribal tattoos – north-estern European tribal tattoos, but what most people do not know is that Britain was called that because its peoples wore body art and the Scottish Picts were known as that because they wore skin paint. The Celts were among the first to use body art, but absolutely not the only ones.

The Meanings Of Flower Tattoos

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

There are trends in tattooing, just like there are in jewellery, hairstyles and most other items and one of the rising trends is flower tattoos. This has much to do with the fact that more and more women like tattoos these days than ever before particularly in the Developed world. The good things about flower tattoos is that you do not have to modify them if you become divorced and their significance is not blatant.

Flower tattoos can have a subtle meaning or no meaning at all, depending on the whim of the wearer. If you opt to think that flowers have a extraordinary significance, then every type of flower or each arrangement of flowers may mean something different as well. ‘Say it with flowers’ is an old marketing slogan.

So, what do flower tattoos mean? Well, every nationality or each continent might understand something else by different flowers but here we will take a look at what many tattoo artists and tattooees say is intended by flower tattoos.

In general, flower tattoos conjure up thoughts of nature, airiness, light and gentility. Flowers remind us of life and even life despite adversity. ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’ as the Royal Air Force saying goes. Who does not look for the first snowdrops or crocuses in the spring as a signal that the winter is drawing to a close?

If you think about the meaning of the colour of roses, it may help you pick what colour flower tattoo you want. For instance, a white flower may stand for clean living, purity, modesty or chastity. Red might mean the opposite or at the very least passionate. Yellow has the meaning of friendship or ‘friendly’ in roses. A quick search on Google will reveal the meaning of dozens of rose colours.

We all have our idea of what roses mean in the Developed world, but the same sort of meaning is attributed to the waterlily or the Lotus Blossom in the East. The Lotus Blossom has the additional meaning of good fortune, peace and tranquility. In other parts of the world, the Acacia flower denotes love and friendship

In Ireland, the Shamrock is the plant of good luck and numerous people of Irish descent wear a shamrock tattoo on their arm. Other well-liked flower tattoos in the West are Violets, which are said to represent a love of home, hearth and garden, because it is an old plant that often grew in cottages and hedgerows.

The Iris is said to symbolize wisdom and perception and the Magnolia a love of nature and, in particular, flowers themselves. The favourite flower tattoo in Wales is the Daffodil, the national flower of Wales. If you are not certain what meaning you would like to express with a flower tattoo, why not make up a posy of your favourite flowers and have that tattooed on?

Flower tattoos are better than words or the more traditional tattoos like anchors, because their meaning is ambiguous and you never need regret having the tattoo done, if you undergo a radical change in your life.

If Companies Have Been Tracking Your Internet Activities, Who is Keeping Track of Them

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Now there is a better and more secure way to surf the net. You do not have to fret a lot about behavioral tracking. You can decide to remain private and do away with those unwelcome advertisements.

For quite a long time, debates have been focused on how users will enjoy additional freedom from online monitoring. Regulators have, for a long time, pressured online organizations to include these features in their browsers. In the end Google and Mozilla acted positively on this. They have just announced that their browsers would have features that would allow opting out of monitoring. Now, users can decide how they would behave on the internet. One can now stay permanently out of the internet tracking scheme. Numerous advertisers and data profilers used to follow electronic behavior. From this they will develop profiles and deliver tailored ads to target consumers.

Google and Yahoo, collectively with other sizeable internet advertisers and data trackers initiated this shift. They would like to put forward an easier method for customers to opt out of tracking on their websites. Earlier, opting out was rather difficult and more demanding on the side of consumers. Microsoft would also offer a feature in Internet Explorer where customers could intentionally stop monitoring efforts.

Some people were not conscious that they may possibly be tracked online. There is therefore a need to update them. Numerous browsers include this feature currently. A consumer can decide whether or not they allows their activities to be tracked or not. Although there is a further concern that should be given importance. People would not want to go through difficult procedures. They want clear-cut techniques rather than a maze of events. Clarity and simplicity are 2 of the most imperative criteria.

The Federal Trade Commission sometime last year has suggested ways to guard online privacy. Consumers were also informed of various clear and easy ways to opt out of data tracking. This has somehow stirred these web providers to improve their electronic privacy protection conditions. This of course is with the pledge that their companies would not be adversely affected.

On top of this, Congress ought to get in and close the loopholes. Internet corporations have their particular objectives whereas consumers have their own wishes too. Congress should at least have a hand in closing this hole. For one, it could compel all advertising and tracking agencies to offer customers good choice. Would they want to be followed online and be given tailored ads?

Online monitoring is a very serious problem. One way to stop online monitoring is to use a Proxy to foil companies from monitoring you.

Is A Non-Vegetarian Diet Healthy?

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Some people say that many of the things that are in a normal western diet are inherently not good for adult human beings. Their argument basically goes that if we were to cut out these things, then we would live longer, healthier lives. Before we take a look at some of these items, I want to say that not everybody agrees with these points of view.

One of the most well-liked foodstuffs that is not much use to adult human beings is milk. Animal milk is just too rich for humans and besides that it is acidic and mucous-forming Think about it: why would we be designed to need the milk of other animals after we have been weaned off our own mother’s milk because we no longer required it? It sounds ludicrous, does it not?

Maybe the reason we are told to drink milk is so that farmers can sell it to us. Some of the major concerns with drinking milk is the quantity of chemicals and growth hormones that were fed to the cow.

It remains in the milk for the benefit of her calves, and we drink the same cocktail of drugs and hormones that is intended to force calfs grow. Unfortunately, the antibiotics given to the cow and the pesticides in her feed also show up in the milk she produces. Regrettably for us humans that is. Milk is also loaded with cholesterol and it’s calcium content is a problem for humans to extract.

It is frequently said that drinking milk will help stave off osteoporosis because of the high calcium content of milk, but if it is difficult for us to extract, then that is a rather doubtful claim. Why take the risk when you can simply take a few calcium pills? In rural Thailand very, very few individuals eat any dairy products at all and a lack of calcium is not a local concern.

Eggs are not that healthy for you either because they are high in cholesterol. They also contain growth hormones, pesticides and antibiotics for the same reasons that milk does. Salmonella is a serious danger if the chickens are not dosed up to the eyeballs with antibiotics. Eggs can also result in constipation.

Fish is considered a healthy alternative to meat, yet you have to be careful with that as well nowadays. There is so much heavy metal is some fish like tuna and salmon, that it is recommended not to eat these fish more than once a week.

So it cannot be good to eat it at all if you are eating doses of mercury and whatever else too.

Of course, not all vegetarians stay away from all the foodstuffs listed above. In fact, most vegetarians will eat fish, a few less will eat cheese, eggs and drink milk. The smallest group of common vegetarian creeds is the vegans who will eat none of the above – no animal products whatsoever may pass their lips.

How Do People Become Deaf?

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Many people have asked themselves how you become deaf at one time or another. The fact is though that it is not always an easy question to answer, as some people are born deaf and others go deaf. Here are some of the main reasons of deafness in later life, that is, they are not birth defects.

Unrelenting very earsplitting music can affect your eardrums and result in a degree of deafness or even absolute deafness. So, when your parents were warning you to turn the music down when you were a kid, they were speaking sense. Studies have shown that noisy music causes deafness.

Indeed, rock stars such as Eric Clapton accept as true that playing on stage in front of very powerful speakers is a direct contributing factor to deafness amongst rock musicians. Deafness from loud music is most likely to occur if the musicians play loud music on a regular basis, which is exactly what happens when a band is on tour.

Actors and actresses run a pretty high risk of having their hearing impaired by props and special effects. For instance, President Reagan had to use a deaf aid in later life and he attributed that to one day on a set when a gun was fired too near to his head by mistake. Imagine the effect on the hearing of repetitive explosions and gun shots in a war film or a cowboy movie.

Sometimes children go deaf as the result of illness or disease or even puberty. Sometimes this type of deafness wears off but sometimes it does not. Catarrh can also result in deafness in children although this may only be temporary.

Some babies are born deaf and sometimes the cause is genetic or it could be caused by such illnesses as cytomegalovirus or toxolasmosis. In fact, there several ‘children’s illnesses’ that can lead to deafness if they are not treated quickly and correctly. Ototoxic drugs can also cause deafness as can some other medications.

Premature babies that are were born with jaundice run the risk of being born deaf or of going deaf early in life as do babies that underwent a lack or shortage of oxygen because of an awkward delivery.

People lose their hearing gradually as they get older too. This is a natural part of the aging process and it could be thanks to to the cumulative effect of all the loud noise, all the illnesses and their remedies that we have undergone during our lives.

If you work in a loud environment such as a quarry, a construction site, in the military or at an airport, you should use ear protectors, otherwise your hearing will probably deteriorate slowly. So gradually, that you do not realize it until someone tells you that the TV is too loud.

You ought to take care of your hearing and teach your children to do the same from an early age. Young peoples’ hearing is not completely developed and so it can be more easily injured. Therefore, try to keep your young children away from loud noises, including loud music.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on a lot of topics, but is at present concerned with hearing aids reviews. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at Digital Hearing Aids Prices.

The Land Of Song – Wales

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Wales has a long history of music and has been known as the ‘land of song’ since at least the Nineteenth Century. This reference to Wales as the land of song, probably comes from the passionate singing in Welsh churches and at Welsh sports meetings, particularly at rugby matches. However, Wales’ links with music go much further back than that.

Wales has a tradition of folk music which is closely linked with Scottish and Irish folk music. There are several forms of musical gathering that are comparable to those in other Celtic countries in the United Kingdom. For instance there is the twmpath (folk dance session), g?yl werin (folk festival) and noson lawen (a traditional party comparable to the Gaelic “C?ilidh”).

Contemporary Welsh folk musicians have often resurrected traditions which had been suppressed or forgotten, and have competed with imported and native rock and pop trends. This has been particularly the case since the 1990′s.

Despite contemporary Welsh trends in music, Wales will always be connected with Male Voice Choirs such as the Morriston Orpheus Choir and Treorchy Male Voice Choir which benefit from world wide fame.

These choirs were frequently made up of workers from one village or one coal mine and so it was quite natural for men to sing when one town played against another, especially if that game was Wales’ national sport of rugby. The first time the Welsh National Anthem, ‘Yr Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ (‘The Old Country of my Fathers’, normally translated as ‘Land of My Fathers’), was sung at an International sporting event was in 1905

Along side the choirs, brass bands developed in villages, working men’s associations, churches and at work especially in South Wales where brass bands are still very popular. In fact, the Cory Band is one of the most best brass bands in the world.

There were quite a few world renowned Welsh singers in the Twentieth Century and some of them are still singing to jam-packed audiences worldwide. Ivor Novello was one of the first who became well-known during the First World War as a singer songwriter. Then there was Geraint Evans and Delme Bryn-Jones in the Second World War.

After that, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey began their singing careers in the 1950′s but are still singing fifty years later. There were also popular bands in the Seventies and Eighties such as Man and Budgie and solo artists such as Shakin’ Stevens, nnie Tyler and John Cale (Velvet Underground).

In more recent times, we have seen the Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, Super Furry Animals and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci; the latter two bands being famous for lots of their songs’ lyrics being in Welsh.

There have always been operatic singers as well such as Rebecca Evans, Aled Jones, Bryn Tervel and Charlotte Church. Cardiff hosts the ‘Singer of the World’ competition and the Wales also has its very own Eisteddfod, where Pavarotti sang for years. It was because of Wales tradition as a nation of singers that Paul Robeson sang in Wales in the Fifties

Is It OK To Be An Expectant Vegetarian Mother?

Monday, July 4th, 2011

There is nothing per se wrong with following a vegetarian regime if you are expecting a baby. Whether you were a vegetarian before you became pregnant or you have chosen to be a vegetarian now that you are pregnant, the issue is the same as that for all mothers-to-be: namely, to make sure that you and the baby have all the vitamins and nutrients that you both need.

This is a somewhat more difficult quest if you are just starting off down the vegetarian road because of your lack of knowledge, but it is not that hard. There is so much information on the Net and in books now, and the doctors will be monitoring you, so you ought not miss out on anything you both require.

Your baby will need to grow a couple of pounds of bones, so calcium is one of your main priorities yet it is also one of the nutrients that a non-vegetarian can leave meat to provide. If you are at the stage of being a vegetarian where you eat meals of meat and three veg but without the meat, you must have a serious rethink, but you could take supplements and eat tofu, broccoli and other dark green leafy vegetables like spinach and cabbage.

Vitamin D is simple, yet you do require a regular quantity of it. Our skin synthesizes Vitamin D from sunlight, so you need to go out in the sun for half an hour a day or more. However, it is no good going out in the midday sun with suntan lotion on.

It is better to go outside in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less expected to burn you. It does not even have to be bright sunlight for your body to make Vitamin D.

Vitamin B12 is abundant in red meat, but scarcely present at all in plants. However, there are a couple of vegetable sources of vitamin B12: soya (tofu) is one of them and vitamin-enhanced vegetarian products (normally cereals) are another.

Even so, you will probably have to take supplements to acquire enough vitamin B12 for an expectant mother. Luckily, your doctor will be keeping an eye on your Vitamin B12 levels and he or she will be able to advise you.

You will also need lots of iron, which is also plentiful in meat, and also in many vegetables. You have to have iron to keep your blood in decent shape and a lack of iron shows up as aenemia.

Again, dark green, leafy vegetables are the order of the day here as are beans, seeds and nuts. However, due to the quantity of iron that you will require, you might need supplements for this one too.

You require protein. A normal diet gets protein from dairy products like milk and cheese; from eggs and from meat and fish. You may or you may not be eating some of those products, but if you are not then you will need to derive your protein from somewhere else. Tofu is a decent source of vegetable protein, but vegetable protein is a pretty difficult one to find if you do not like tofu.

You will need zinc which again is abundant in meat. If you are looking for a vegetable source there are lots in the form of grains – all the different sorts of grains including those used for bread,

No Nonsense Vegetarian Cooking

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

A lot of individuals think that they just would not have the time to become vegetarians. This is because if you cut the meat out of a standard diet, you will become malnourished. You need to replace the nutrients and vitamins accessible from meat with the same or comparable nutrients and vitamins in other foodstuffs like lentils, beans, pulses, nuts and legumes.

This means that vegetarians need to plan their meals more precisely that meat-eaters, but it does not have to be an obsession. There are fairly simple methods of getting all your mind and body requires.

It is probably factual to say that it is more difficult to plan meals in the right manner whilst you first become a vegetarian, but you will soon get the hang of preparing meals that are nutritious and healthy. However, that gets harder and harder, the more foodstuffs that you leave out from your diet.

Some vegetarians will eat fish but some will not; some vegetarians will eat eggs and dairy products, and others will not. The more dedicated the vegetarian the more a problem it is to replenish the vitamins that you are lacking by not consuming meat.

One manner of looking at how difficult it is to be a vegetarian is by bearing in mind that meat needs to be cooked but fruit and vegetables do not (or not all of them anyway).

Sandwiches are also a very fast vegetarian snack and you ought to take full advantage of all the different kinds of bread on the market to vary the flavours and the benefits from the ingredients.

Each cook should understand how to make a casserole and this is also true of vegetarian cooks. Maybe the best manner of cooking a casserole is in a crock pot, so if you have not got one yet, buy one as soon as possible. After using your crock pot for a week, you will be asking yourself how you ever made the time to live without one before.

You can prepare important vegetarian casseroles for your family when you are at work or doing something else and there are thousands of vegetarian crock pot recipes without having to resort to using a meat recipe and only leaving out the meat.

The beauty of a crock pot is that you can prepare all kinds of food in it, not merely casseroles. You can create puddings, breads and cakes, but that can become the topic of future articles. The other boon to the busy cook is the microwave. You can microwave potatoes and other vegetables in minutes instead of roasting them for hours with the meat.

So next time you or someone else says that you do not have time to be a vegetarian, keep in mind that technology has moved on from the Seventies and it is a lot easier these days. There is a lot more known about vegetarianism now and that knowledge is much more widely available – especially on the Web and there are also better cooking devices like programmable crock pots and microwaves.

Your Vegetarian Baby

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

If you are reading this article, the likelihood is that you are at least fifteen years of age, so if you were to choose to become a vegetarian at this moment, you would have at least fifteen yeas of eating meat behind you and it is difficult to change the habits of a lifetime.

Lifestyle changes are the hardest to accomplish, so it is easier to maintain a vegetarian lifestyle, if you have never consumed meat at all. Therefore, the baby of a vegetarian mother has the best opportunity of maintaining a vegetarian life.

It is a matter of ethics whether a vegan mother should feed her baby on breast milk. There is no reason why she ought to not do so. Her body is producing milk for her baby, but she might not want to give her baby ‘animal fat products’. It is a strange decision to have to take.

After the baby has been weaned, the options are easier again. You can make fantastic baby food recipes with fresh fruit and vegetables and a blender. Soya is another vegetable product that is useful for your baby’s vegetarian diet because it is one of the few vegetable sources of protein.

Soya is also very adaptable, although not always recommended for very young babies. You can eat or drink soya and you can bake, boil or fry it. It is fairly bland on its own, yet it takes on the flavours of whatever you cook it with, so it can be used to push up the protein content of almost anything.

If you are intent on raising your child as a vegetarian or even a vegan, you have to be very wary after weaning, not to replace your own milk with cow’s milk. However, this is where you will have to take guidance from your doctor or midwife.

Do not let philosophy and principles stand in the way of your baby’s health. If your doctor decides that your baby actually needs the things that are present in cow’s milk, then so be it, unless you seek out a vegetarian doctor for a second opinion.

At around six months of age, babies can begin eating cereals. Rice is one of the easiest to digest. You can create a very thin rice meal by boiling the rice in water until it practically disappears, leaving that characteristic white water. Millions of Asian babies grow up on rice water every year.

As a vegetarian of some experience, you will have a good idea about which combinations of food fulfill dietary requirements, so you will be able to use this information to make sure that your baby does not go short of anything, and pay particular attention to any deficiencies that the doctor notices.

Naturally, you have to tell your doctor from the outset that you are a vegetarian and that you would like your baby to be brought up in the same fashion, because that could well have an impact on the vitamins or supplements that the doctor gives your baby.

Teenage Vegetarians – Are They Doing The Right Thing?

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Teenagers are very suggestible and tend to be more left-wing than their parents, because they are under the influence of their teachers, who tend to be more left-wing as well. This tends to make teenagers more in touch with environmental problems and other world problems. This can send teenagers off in many directions, and one of the most popular, especially among teenage girls, is vegetarianism.

This phase frequently passes for one reason or another. Sometimes the parents cannot be bothered to cater to their new diet and occasionally the teenager merely misses bacon sandwiches too much to keep up the diet. However, many do stick to their principles or come back to them later on in life.

Their children going vegetarian is frequently a cause for anxiety for parents, yet it need not be. If your teenagers adopt vegetarianism you will probably become concerned that they get enough protein, but that can be taken care of. Instead, be grateful that they will be missing out on all the rubbish food that most teenagers eat in these, their most formative years.

If your teenager wants to become a vegetarian, you ought to encourage it, even though it will cost you more time especially if you do not know much about vegetarianism yourself. It will be a steep learning curve for you and your children in the starting.

One of the first things that a parent has to assess is to what degree does their child hope to go. Does he or she merely want to give up meat or also give up fish or go the whole hog (!) and give up milk, dairy and eggs as well. These three levels make vegetarianism progressively harder.

One of the foremost problems about going vegetarian (particularly for developing teenagers) is vitamin deficiency. Meat is concentrated vegetable matter and is our main source of vitamins such as calcium, vitamin B12 and iron.

You cannot do without these vitamins and several others besides, so if you give up meat, you will have to take them in tablet form until you find or take up a means of re-introducing them into your diet in food form.

There will be numerous new foods for your teenager to taste in their task to replace meat and some of these options may be unpalatable, depending on your child’s outlook on eating new foods.

Tofu is one. Some people love it and some people hate it, and yet it is a very handy alternative to meat. There are others, but it could be a long process of trial and error and your teen might simply quit.

If your teenager wants to quit, it is probably a good idea to make it easy for them to do so without them losing face or feeling that they have failed. It is difficult to undertake lifestyle changes even at that relatively young age and who knows, maybe they will return to (a level of) vegetarianism after they leave home and begin cooking for themselves.
