Four Generations of Carpentry

Friday, November 20th, 2009

My family has had carpenters in it for at least four generations and I can not go back any farther than that. My father’s father came from Anglesey, an island off north Wales called Ynys Mon in Welsh. I visited his birthplace once. We were directed by a local old-timer to a meadow, but we could not see a dwelling or any ruins. I scrambled up unto a mound of earth to get a better view and then we realized that I was standing on his old home.

He had lived in a hole in the ground covered over with earth! A door was still on it, overgrown after 70 years or so of neglect and there was a kind of stone chimney in the long grass on the top. I was 10 years old and my Dad was 33 and it was the only time either of us went the length of Wales to look up our family history. It is more than probable that my great-grandfather was a shepherd.

My grandfather ran away from home at– years of age to Liverpool and became an apprentice ship’s carpenter. That would have been in’14. What a time to choose to go out into the big world – the start of the First World War in Europe. He could not speak English at the time, but must have taught himself as he learned his apprenticeship.

He passed out as the best in his year and was given a set of the finest woodworking tools of the age. Each tool had a small brass plate in the handle with his name etched onto it. My father still treasured them when I was growing up.

I never met my granndfather; he died a month before I was born, but I was named after him and, knowing that I was due and that he was going, he left me a teething ring, which I still have. More to the point of this article though, there was not a single power tool in his tool bag when he died in’54.

My father was the youngest son and when he was old enough, he had to leave school to be apprentice to his father who had stopped his roaming by then. Growing up with my father in the’50′s and’60′s, I do not remember him using power tools either. He used a brace-and-bit for drilling, several assorted hand-sharpened saws for cutting and his only acquiescence to modern technology, a Yankee, which was a pump-action screwdriver. Everything he needed to hang a door or cut a roof was in one bag or later on a box, which he made himself.

I went away to study and travel and when I returned for good 12 years later, my brother had finished his carpenter’s apprenticeship and was working for my Dad. That would have been in about’80 and my brother still vows to ths day that Dad only bought power tools then because he, my brother, had learned how use them in technical college. Something which my father always denied, although it did seem a bit of a coincidence to me. My brother, now in his Fifties, still uses hand tools where he can, but also has the full range of power tools in a near-by van.

His son, now nearly 30 is also a carpenter and he has a power tool for every job and throw-away saws. How times have changed.

Electric Screwdrivers

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Have you ever had to cope with a obstinate screw that just would not go into the material as easily as you wanted? How about one that would not come out for you either? This is annoying as well as time wasting. Power screwdrivers are a great resolution for these issues. They are very effective and inexpensive.

In line power screwdrivers are intended for fundamental household projects. They are not very powerful, but more than adequate to get the task finished. For heavy duty work, think about using a drywall screwdriver. Some models offer a range of speeds. There are a number of models to select from. Some are very similar in design to a basic screwdriver. Other are shaped like the number seven, with a handle for you to channel the screws in. Others come with a handle that swings to help you to get into just about any angle you can come across.

Choose a electric screwdriver that fits well in your hand. Some of the handles are coarse and others have a soft, foam grip on them. Hold the electric screwdriver in your hand and see how it feels after a few minutes. If you will be using it for long periods of time then comfort is very important. You don’t want to end up with sore hands or blisters.

Different electric screwdrivers have varying amounts of torque electric and speeds. You will want to compare this information before deciding on the electric screwdriver you wish to buy. Take some time to appraise what each power screwdriver is suggested for. Compare that with the jobs you are liable to take on with the electric screwdriver.

It is a good idea to maintain your power screwdriver fully charged. This will give you the best possible results from it. If the battery doesn’t hold a charge for very long, you will to swap the battery. Some people choose to buy a second battery from the start so that they can have one charging and one in the power screwdriver. This is highly recommended if you are going to be using the power screwdriver on a regular basis.

For those of you who mean to use your power screwdriver often, consider buying a power screwdriver kit. It comes with a sturdy carrying case. Inside you will find the power screwdriver and a slit for each accessory. You will normally get many sizes of bits to use. It will also include a power cord. Some of the power screwdriver kits also include an extra battery as well as a charger that plugs into your cigarette lighter. You can get a electric screwdriver kit at a much better price than having to purchase accessories individually.

Very few accidents truly result from using a electric screwdriver, but they can. When using a power screwdriver, remember the driving force behind it. Both of your hands should be away from the area that turns. The turning blade can slice your hand if you aren’t careful. It is a good idea to use eye protection as well.

Electric screwdrivers will drive through almost everything. It is very important that you make sure there are no power cords or wires behind the spot where you are working. Keep your hair pulled away from your face too. Leaning forward to see your progress can result in loose hair getting caught and twisted on the blade.

Pool Safety For Children

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Owning a swimming pool in your house or garden can be a great way to have fun for yourself and indeed your entire family. However, in spite of that, it can also be rather dangerous if you have children around. If you have the patience, you ought to wait until your kids are at least five years old or more before you put a swimming pool on your property. On the other hand, if you already have a swimming pool, there are ways that you can safe-guard your family.

You should always bear in mind to never, ever, allow your children to be on their own, unsupervised near your pool. Children are drawn to water and it just takes is a slip for them to be in the swimming pool. If you and your children are at your pool side and you need to leave the area even for a second, you should always take your children with you.

To be on the safe side, you must always make sure that you have plenty of safety gear around your pool at all times. Safety gear is essential to have on the poolside, as they could save the life of a child or in deed, anyone else who can’t swim.

You should invest in a shepherd’s hook as well, as you can employ it to drag someone out of the water. Having a telephone at your pool is also a wise investment, as you can easily ring for help in the event of an emergency.

If you don’t already have a fence around your pool you should look into making one right away. A fence is a great way to keep children away from your swimming pool. If you have a protective fence up, you won’t have to worry about small children falling into it, while you are away from the pool. When you put your fence up, you ought to always ensure that it’s at least six feet high with a locking gate. In this way, no one can get into the pool without a key, which you should keep on you at all times.

You should learn artificial respiration as well. Even though you hopefully will not ever have to use it. It is always great to know artificial respiration in the event of someone falling in your pool that is unable to swim. Whenever you have children you know can’t swim at your pool, you should always stay within reach of them, so you can react instantly if they fall in. A minute can be all it takes to save someone’s life.

Always bear in mind that swimming is fun, although you have to always think in terms of safety first. Once you have finished using your pool for the day, make sure that you secure the area well – and lock the gate up tight so no one can get in.

Straight Marriages – Gay Unions

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

The debate on gay marriages has been a very hot political topic for many years and because it is such a hot topic, the number of places that have come out publicly either for or against the topic is not astounding. While there are few states that allow gay or same-sex marriage, there are a few that are more liberal, allowing almost equal rights. Massachusetts is currently the only state in the United States that allows same-sex marriages. The state of Rhode Island is generous enough to recognize as legal, any same-sex marriage that is performed in Massachusetts, which is a major victory according to many same-sex supporters.

Elections of latter years have seen this as a very hot subject and with the White House stating publicly that marriage must only be between a man and a woman, not same-sexes, many states have been very reluctant to sanction same-sex marriages. However, a few states have sanctioned same-sex civil unions, which are very much like marriage.

Those states are: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, and Vermont. The District of Columbia also recognizes same-sex unions and the Governor of New Hampshire has stated openly that he will soon sign a bill giving the go-ahead to same-sex unions. This is a major advance for supporters of the movement.

While many states have not allowedf same-sex marriage, there are states which are sitting on the fence discussing the topic. Many couples who are fighting for their rights have argued that there is absolutely no difference in the way they run their households compared with their heterosexual counterparts. They have also pointed out that while they may be with a partner who is the same sex as them, they do still love their partner and should have the legal right to marry them too.

This has always been a contentious issue, and likely will continue to be a contentious issue for many years to come. With the issues raging within the states and at the national level, it will probably be a very long time before the gay and lesbian rights groups are able to truly declare a victory for their cause. Nevertheless, there is some solace to be taken in the small victories as they occur, and another Governor of a state being ready to permit a civil union is at least a move in the direction towards triumph.

However, the fact remains that the views of the individual states usually reflect the views of the President. With a President in office who is a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage and civil union, it is unlikely to allow much room for many triumphs until a more accommodating, or rather liberal, President is in the White House. Only time will tell what President Obama’s views are.

After the bill has passed through all the channels of state, it will go into effect as early as the next year for the New Hampshire residents, who have been waiting patiently. Each state that gives this right to its residents opens the door to more states to become more tolerant. Finally, this paves the way for America to join most of Europe in recognizing the legal inequalities of straight and gay couples nationwide.

Protecting Children with Mental Disorders

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Who are the predators? Predators are Cyber Stalkers, serial killers/rapists, rapists, paedophiles, women beaters, child abusers, thieves et cetera. Predators very often have mental disorders that keep them from behaving correctly in normal society. Children with mental disorders are often the victims of these predators, and sometimes children with mental illnesses are the predators themselves. In fact, the creator of one of the most dangerous viruses online came from an eighteen-year old English boy.

Dangers mental disorders: Not everyone with a mental illness is a threat to society. Generally, predators with mental illnesses are the victims of sociopathic, psychopathic and anti-social disorders, oppositional defiance, conduct control disorders, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorders (BPD), and psychosis. While there are a few other mental illnesses that pose a threat to our society, this is a list of the most common potential dangers that lurk on the streets and on the Internet.

How to save a child with mental disorders from dangers : Never treat your child as if he/she has a mental disorder. Treat your child as special, yet avoid treating the child as if he/she is mentally ill, because many mentally ill patients are extremely intelligent. Teach your child the same rules that other children must live by and stick to those rules. Do not leave room for doubt when danger is present. Teach your child respect by showing respect yourself.

Children with dangerous mental illnesses will often want to watch pornography, violent images, content, et cetera. This makes it harder as a parent to protect your child. However, it is important that you enforce the laws. Never put yourself in danger while enforcing these laws, since some children with dangerous problems can be violent.

If the child refuses to listen to you, bring the police in and make sure that they do their job to help you enforce the rules. You may pay court fees and go through headaches, but I promise you it will benefit you in the end. As a mother raising two boys with dangerous mental problems, I can tell you it isn’t simple, but it can be done.

Children with mental disorders often have brilliant minds that can usually get round any parental controls and will do so without you even knowing. Take more time than normal to monitor your child’s behaviour online. Teach your child that divulging personal information is restricted and encourage them to request your permission when thinking about divulging name, phone number or other details online.

Allow your child to take some responsibility for himself and always encourage your child to join in family discussions that involve them. Furthermore, encourage the child to be safety conscious by telling them to report any wrong committed against them.

One of the most difficult things you’ll ever have to do while raising a child with mental health problems is teaching him/her to stay away from violent images and pornography. It is almost impossible to keep them away from this rubbish. Still, it can be done, if you set a good example for the child.

It is vital that you keep talking and listening to your child. Allow your child to express concerns, opinions, ideals, theories et cetera without demeaning the child. You will be amazed at the wisdom children with some mental illnesses have, if you will only listen to them.

The best advice I can offer you for dealing with children with major mental disorders, such as psychopathy, is to seek help and stand firm. For more child safety tips for children with mental disorders ask advice from a qualified professional.

Note Well: Children learn what they see and hear.

Online Dangers to Child Safety

Friday, June 26th, 2009

What is there to say about the world children inhabit these days? Sexed-up television, pornographic Internet sites and videos and violent board games. A world that is dropping its standards, values, and morals each day, surrounds our kids.

What makes it even worse is that we cannot use Parental Controls any more to stop our children from visiting websites of an adult nature. These days children are knowledgeable about technology and often more so than their parents. How can we keep our children safe from Internet dangers? How can we as parents provide safety for our children, while still battling the corruption going on around the world?

Parental Controls are available on most types of Internet software, yet today, children are skilled at by-passing these Parental Controls. So, what can we do? We can guard our children by monitoring their activities on the Internet closely.

How to use parental controls: It depends on which Internet provider you use, however, I will speak only of the Internet providers I am aware of, since all programs are different. To use AOL Parental Controls, you will need to go to Safety at the Toolbar and click on Parental Controls.

Once you get there, you will see a drop-down list of available usernames. Search for your child’s username and click on it. You will see a popup window appear. Click on ‘Edit Web Control’ and then click ‘Kids Only’, and close. Now your child is protected against Internet sites that hold potential dangers.

Chat rooms pose very serious dangers to children, since anyone can go into these rooms. Often predators frequent these areas, in order to draw children into their dangerous network. In the AOL browser, click on ‘Safety’ and then click on ‘Parental Controls’.

In the same way, click on the ‘Edit IM Controls’, ‘Edit E-mail Controls’, and ‘Edit Chat Control’ and complete the same steps as you did to instigate the ‘Parental Controls’.

It is a good idea to install passwords. Having passwords will offer additional protection for your child. However, do not give the child the passwords, because this will give the child control over the Internet connection, and the child might also reset the controls.

It is also wise to activate your ‘Popup Controllers’ too, since if you do not turn on the controls, pop ups could corrupt your system, or popup adult content, which your child will see when online. You can go into ‘AOL Safety’ at the toolbar to set these popup guards.

If you are using Internet Explorer, open a page. Click on ‘Tools’ at the top menu, click ‘Popup Blocker’ and then click ‘Popup Blocker Settings’. Read the information carefully and set the program at medium. Medium is standard and will block most pop ups. If you put the settings higher than medium you might find it difficult to open websites for browsing.

Some of the dangers posed to children online include: Internet Porn; Child Porn; Child Sexual Abuse; Mobile Porn; and more. As you can see, your child is at serious risk, and if you want to master safety, you have to monitor, and take the steps to safeguard your child against online dangers.

According to recent studies, students have encountered sexual malpractices through webcams, instant messengers, and mobile phones. Additional studies show that pornographic websites are making more profit than each of CBS, ABC, and NBC television channels each year. The surveys claim that the largest group that views porn sites are children. These children are between the ages of twelve and seventeen.

The statistics showed that about 74% of all the porn sites had unmonitored banners, while another 66% of the websites did not announce ‘adult content’ warnings. Moreover, another 11% of the sites did not have ‘sexually explicit content’ warnings and 25% boxed in their visitors by not allowing them to leave their websites. Only 3% of the websites out of more than 14 millions adult websites requested adult permission for minors to visit. So, protect your child now!

About Clinical Depression

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Depression is a mental illness that is often characterized by lengthy periods of sadness and melancholy, say the experts from the field of psychiatry.

However, just because someone slopes around and hates the world in general, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he/she is suffering from depression, but if this kind of behaviour, that feeling of emptiness, loss of self-worth and absolute lack of hope for happiness goes on , then, that individual is probably, indeed, depressed. Still, there are various types of depression too.

Manic or Bipolar depression is characterized by sudden and extreme mood swings – one minute the person is euphoric while the next minute (day or week), he or she feels as if he or she is hades.

Postpartum depression is characterized by a protracted sadness and a lengthy feeling of emptiness by a new mother where physical stress during child birth, an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the new born child can be just some of the possible reasons why some new mothers go through this.

Dysthimia is characterized by a slight similarity with depression, although this kind has been proven to be a great deal less severe, however. as with any case of depression, it should be sorted out immediately.

Cyclothemia is characterized by a slight similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the sufferer of this mental illness has a problem with severe mood swings.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is characterized by being depressed only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall). However, studies prove that more people actually fall ill during the Winter and Autumn seasons. Or they could suffer from severe mood swings, wherein a person’s mood may shift from happy to sad to angry in quite a short period of time.

‘Clinical depression’ or ‘major depression’, as some call it, is the [correct|actual medical term for depression. In fact, clinical depression is more a disorder than an illness, because it refers to those who are suffering from the symptoms that cause depression.

However, despite it being an actual disorder, clinical depression can be treated very successfully. Doctors are usually very optimistic that patients suffering from clinical depression will soon be well on their way to regaining good mental health as long as they receive treatment as soon as they have been diagnosed. Patients who have sought treatment for clinical depression have proven to be very successful in their hopes, given that 80 percent of those treated have found relief from their illness.

If you are looking for answers to questions related to clinical depression, the depression section of the health center is highly recommended, as well as books on psychiatry and the Internet, which offers a lot of helpful information, although self treatment is very much frowned upon. Clinical depression may not pose as great of a threat as the other types of mental illness, but it is best to leave to the professionals who can safely attend to and cure this disorder.

How to Invest for your Retirement

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Retirement may be a long, long way off for you or it could be just around the corner. matter how near or far away it is, you have absolutely got to start investing for it right now. However, saving for retirement isnt what it once was with the increase in the cost of living and the instability of social security. Nowadays, you have to invest for your retirement, as opposed to saving for it!

We shall commence by looking at the retirement plan, which is offered by the company you work for. Once upon a time, these plans were quite sound. However, after the Enron upset and all the problems that followed, people arent as confident in their company retirement plans anymore. However, if you decide not to invest in your companys retirement plan, you do have other options.

First of all, you can invest in bonds, certificates of deposit, money market accounts, mutual funds and stocks in alphabetical order. You do not need to tell anybody that the returns on these investments are to be used for retirement fund, if you don’t want to – it is irrelevant anyway. Just let your money grow over a period of time, and when an investment reaches its maturity date or value, reinvest it and continue to let your money grow.

You can also start an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). IRAs are very popular since the money is not subject to tax until you withdraw the funds. You may also be able to deduct your IRA payments from the taxes that you pay. An IRA may be started at almost any larger bank.

A ROTH IRA is a much newer type of retirement vehicle. With a ROTH IRA, you pay taxes on the money that you are investing into your ROTH IRA account, but when you cash out, no federal taxes are due. Roth IRAs can also be started at most of the larger financial institutions.

Another popular very kind of retirement vehicle is the 401(k). 401(ks) are typically provided by employers, although you may be able to open a 401(k) on your own. You should talk to a financial planner or an accountant to help you decide whether this is right for you or not.

The Keogh plan is another kind of IRA which is more suited to self employed people. Self-employed small business owners may also be interested in Simplified Employee Pension Plans (SEP). This is another type of Keogh scheme that some people typically find easier to run than a regular Keogh scheme.

Whichever retirement investment scheme you choose, just make sure you do choose one! Again, do not depend on social security, company retirement plans, or even an inheritance that may or may not come through! Take care of your financial future by investing in one kind of investment right now.

Brighten Retirement Does Up With Retirement Jokes

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Most people approach retirement with a gloomy countenance. They approach retirement as if it is a surrender to the hands of fate and the decay of the body. So, it is very important to help the retiree realize that retirement is something to be accepted because it is an inevitable stage in life. But how can you do that? Its simple: just poke fun at retirement. Retirement jokes, like the ones made in speeches are popular. However, speeches tend to become emotional to the point where everyone in the room is in a state of gloom and sympathy. But one can raise the level of the mood with retirement jokes (without insulting the retiree, of course).

Examples: In addition to speaking about the wonderful times the speaker has shared with the retiree, he/she can add something that will lighten up the atmosphere. One could give a tombstone slab, with the inscription In Advance on it. If you’re a friend, you may also make a joke by calling the retiree granddad or grandfather whenever the retiree speaks to you, as in “OK, granddad”. This may also help lighten the atmosphere. But dont go over the top, of course.

Another gag that might help is a wig in an unusual color like pink, green or purple. A follow up gag to that jocularity might be that he might require a wig in the very near future. If he declines it, say: Okay, then wear a paper bag instead when you do go bald. Always be prepared for when a joke falls flat. So keep those backup jokes ready! Believe it or not, some agencies write and sell personalized retirement speeches with witty jokes built in after knowing the personality and interests of the retiree. These companies usually add jokes about the retirees profession. If one cannot find enough retirement jokes, a visit to a bookstore can help a great deal.

There are joke books that cover a vast range of topics, only one of which is retirement. A little search on this or that will help inspire the reader if he/she isnt a natural comedian. These may also be great retirement gifts too, helping the retiree have a good laugh on one of those boring Monday afternoons. There are also a lot of websites on the net that provide a lot of jokes and free retirement e-books. The e-books that are available range from the 150 Best Things Said about Retirement to Retirement Wisdoms You Wont Get from your Trust Managerr.

Conclusion: One has a lot of leeway when one is telling jokes at a retirement party. If you know someone who is coming near to retirement, you can first send an email or two which has retirement quotes like retirement is when everyday is Saturday and retirement: goodbye tension, hello pension!. It is a good gesture and gives the sense that you know what the future retiree is going through.

Again, keep the retiree (future or not) relaxed as much as you can. Make him/her think about retirement with a smile and not with a sigh as much as you can. And when the retirement party does come, keep the same light-hearted approach, inserting jokes here and there and doing some gags like the ones said above. Not only will the retiree be less wary about retirement, he/she will focus more on the people who made him happy on that bitter-sweet day, especially the one who gave him that weird pink wig.
