Plus Size Clothing

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

The clothing industry is absolutely massive and is certainly one of the biggest industries in the world employing millions of people, especially in Asia. Imagine the number of factory workers and sales people and all the hauliers in between who are working in the textile industry. Possibly only the food industry is larger.

Despite all those people and all that money, there is not really a lot of money to be made from selling ordinary, everyday clothing. Just look at how cheap a T-shirt can be and it has most likely been made and brought from somewhere like Thailand – half a world away. A retailer has to sell a great deal of this stuff to make a living.

The big money in the clothing industry comes from unusual clothing. That is specialized garments and by ‘specialized garments’, here I am including high fashion, haute couture and designer clothing. People, especially women, like to keep up with the latest styles and in the realm of fashion a small fold here or a slight tuck there is all it takes to show that one skirt is this year’s fashion and that that one is last year’s.

Plus size clothing is an unusual case. Plus size clothing is expensive, but it was not fashionable for a long, long time. Manufacturers seemed to believe for decades that plus size people were content to wear black or garish colours. They seemed to think that plus sizers were not interested in fashion. Often the plus size department would be dumped next to the maternity department and not in the fashion section.

Even though the state of affairs is getting better for the plus size woman, the fabrics and the colours used in plus size clothing still tend to be different from those used for the sizes ten and twelve.

The colours are often flashier and the styling tends to make plus size women look older especially when they are dressed in formal evening wear.

The other option is to go to specialist plus size clothing shops, but this is where they have you again. Specialized fashion translates into very expensive, so very few large women can afford to obtain their wardrobe from these shops.

A good question to ponder upon is this: if there is a crisis of obesity in the western world in general, why does the fashion industry concentrate on smaller, often younger, women? Older, often heavier, women have more money that their younger counterparts too.

It is true that the situation is improving on the fashion front for plus sizers and people are also attempting to lose weight, so maybe the two sides will slowly draw nearer to one another.

In the meantime, larger ladies have to discover a way of making the world’s manufacturers of ladies clothing comprehend that they want fashionable plus size clothing made in exactly the same style, from exactly the same material and in exactly the same colours as the clothing that they make for smaller women.

Why People Like Sports Cars

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

People frequently wonder why people like sports cars. Some say that it is the macho image, some say that it is a striving to revisit the owner’s youth, some see them as sex symbols and pulling magnets and maybe all those are valid, but one thing is for certain, sports cars stand out in an age when you have to be an expert on cars to be able to tell the difference between the different models without looking at the badge.

Contemporary family cars all look the same; all SUV’s look the same, all pick ups look the same, because they are all designed by computer and computers can just come to one ‘best’ conclusion. Enquire of a computer which is the most aerodynamic shape and it is not going to give you fifty alternatives, is it? As a result, all family cars look the same.

But sports cars are all different. Manufacturers of sports cars like their models to stand out for their beauty and style among other things. That is not to say that sports car manufacturers do not use computers, but they can permit themselves more freedom in the design aspect because the engine is going to be more powerful and the materials are going to be more expensive (that means lighter) and fuel economy is not the name of the game – beauty and style are.

If you have reservations about what I am saying, look at real racing cars like those in Formula One – they all look the same as well, because a computer was asked: what is the most aerodynamic and fuel economic shape? Beauty and style are beside the point in Formula One.

Another reason why people like sports cars is because they are faster than regular cars, although most countries have restrictions on how fast you can drive on their roads. However, the fast acceleration that a performance car like a sports car has, is still useful for overtaking and getting out of difficulty. If used properly, acceleration is a helpful safety feature.

Some individuals also like to show off their wealth by buying an ostentatious car, because everyone knows that a Maseratti, a Lamborghini or a Ferrari is very expensive. The appearance of these cars is important to their owners, because not only are they flamboyant, but they are also beautiful, sleek and stylish and the owner hopes that some of that identity will rub off on him or her.

Different sports cars also have different driving characteristics. Whilst this is a fact of all marques of cars, it does not matter so much if steering is a touch light on a family car travelling at 40 mph, but it does on a sports car travelling at 80 mph.

The car has to be just right for the driver’s ability and preferences. The car will not be manufactured to suit the driver, so drivers of sports cars normally have their favourites the choice of which is affected by its handling characteristics.

A last reason why drivers like sports cars is because they frequently hold their value well and can even rise in value if it is a particularly special or desirable model.

How To Find Free Quilt Patterns

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Throughout history, ladies who quilted have shared patterns, designs, tips and experience to others within their group. It was a way for women to get together in a social group without risking being accused of wasting time. Not merely did they use their ‘social time’ to make items, quilts, which could be used or sold, but they made them out of scrap material: small off-cuts of fabric which other people might call rags.

Women still do this today, particularly in the mid-west. If you want to get into quilting, you could do a lot worse than join a quilting club or group. Look in your local yellow pages or ask at a crafts shop.

If you have no source of free quilting patterns from a local club, try the Internet. If you use the search term ‘free quilting patterns’ in Google or Yahoo, you will see hundreds of choices. Some will be very suitable and others will be worthless and you will have to dig down to work out which are which.

If you are wondering why anyone should offer free quilting patterns, the reason is that they will want you to visit their web site to request it and your email address to supply it. This gives them all they require to send you promotional emails until you unsubscribe.

Monitor the emails they send you and if you do not like them, do not feel guilty around unsubscribing instantly, even if the free quilting patterns were pretty helpful. You will not be hurting anyone’s feelings, no-one will even know who you are. It is all done automatically with programs known as autoresponders.

Patterns that you will be offered in your quest for free quilting patterns are usually the traditional ones that have passed into the public domain like the Lone Star, the Log Cabin and other traditional American patterns.

If you like the traditional quilting patterns this is all very well, but if you want something more modern and less well-known you will probably have to pay for it. The average price of a quilting pattern is somewhere around $25, but it can also be $10 more or less. EBay can be a decent source of cheap quilting patterns.

However, do not give up on your quest for free quilting patterns too quickly because there definitely is a plethora of free quilting patterns on the Net, you only have to keep looking. Before you start, it would be worth creating a folder known as Quilt Patterns in your Favorites Folder. Then you can save any useful web sites in there so that you can return to them easily again.

Browsing for free quilting patterns, whether on the Internet or asking friends, is an agreeable aspect of the hobby of quilting, one that is certain to keep you engrossed for numerous hours.

Retirement Gift Ideas For Executives

Monday, November 21st, 2011

For those top people in business, who have probably tasted the finer things in life, personalization is the key to giving the perfect retirement gift. It must be a gift that allows them to remember their time in the corporation, where they had worked so hard for decades to get to the desk of their dreams.

The present must be something to do with their previous business life, and which, after their life-time of profitable deals and spot-on investments, reminds them of those business-related activities that gave them pleasure and therefore makes them feel happy again. These two things are fundamental and necessary to help the former executive remember how they lived their working lives, and of course, the one who thoughtfully gave them the gift.

For The Keen Golfer: Nothing says elitism and enthusiasm more than the sport of golf. The demand for golf clubs, gloves, golf-carts and the like has soared over the years due to the rise in industries like hedge fund investing and financial advisors in general. A rising number of business people simply means more golfers since golf is the sport where lots of them go to bond and become acquainted. Further evidence of this, is that golf courses are becoming more popular in rising economies like India and China, where ‘Mission Hills’ and many other courses are often advertised in the sporting press.

All it takes is some creative thinking. For instance, you could put their company logo, family seal or monogram on some golf balls, markers, tees or their golf bag to display that certain kind of privilege that they relish. For those who love to take friends to the golf course with them, nothing says group bonding more than personalized golf vests for the four friends!

Where they have done well in a favourite tournament with other golfers, a miniature personalized scoreboard print will also stimulate memories as much as photos do. With podium photos and ranks immortalized, you can conjure up the spirit of the competition and help the golfer (and other participants) relive the moment just as if they’re playing and enjoying the game again.

Recreational Gambling: Some executive types spend some of their free time in casinos, where they display their wealth and try to win more to boot. Such people live life in the fast lane, as hey say, winning and losing a lot of money as they go along. The ideal gift for this type of person, are items that represent his/her lifestyle, like a personally blended cigar or a monogrammed cigar case and cutter. What do you think about a customized deck of cards with the logo that represents the retiree’s trade or industry?

You could also go in for the classic gift of expensive wine or champagne, the taste of which will remind them of the good life by its fantastic taste. A bottle of Lafite, Brut or Mensil are on this list. Giving ex top-flight executives these universal symbols of privilege would contribute vastly to the ideal retirement party for them. A cigar case personalized with a monogram and expensive wine do go a long way to achieving this.

The Conclusion: Nothing else will remind them of their former lifestyles more than personalized things that reflect their previous way of life. Giving these sorts of gifts to retiring executives will be spot on. They ought to be able to live their retirement years the way they want to and thinking along the lines of luxury and personalization will help you discover the best retirement gift for them quite easily.

How You Could Landscape Your Garden In The Texas Style

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Most people just let their garden mature naturally in that they do not select a particular style. This is all right, but it can become a hodge-podge, if not looked after. Some people, however, consciously choose to landscape their garden according to a certain style or a theme. Some of these themes are very sophisticated and others are quite simple.

One of the many themes to pick from is the Texas Style. We all know that everything in Texas is done on a large scale, so you would be forgiven for thinking that landscaping in the Texas Style would necessitate a huge garden.

It is perhaps easier to carry out your landscaping in the Texas Style in a bigger garden, but it just depends how you go about it.

The first things to remember are that Texas is very hot and so the terrain closely resembles wilderness. Plants and shrubs are thin on the ground, so to speak. Landscaping in the Texas Style is what you could call minimalist gardening.

You will have to make use of every square inch of your property, if you only have a small plot and the climate will have to be fairly warm in the daytime although it is good if it gets cold at night. This will allow you to grow many of the plants that thrive or at least grow in Texas. One good thing about Texan flowers is that when they do blossom, they really do show a lot of colour.

One of the types of plant that you are certain to have success with is the cactus. There are many types of cactus, so you should not have too much trouble finding several kinds that will grow in your garden in order to create a Texan dry climate look, as long as it does not rain every other day where you reside.

Cacti yield spectacular flowers when they bloom, but they have big thorns, so if you have young children, the Texas Style garden may not be for you for a few years yet.

Once you have your plants sorted out, you can begin looking for accessories. You can pick up ideas from the old cowboy films and from magazines, but a few recommendations are: a chow wagon style barbecue area with a canvas hood; some broken wagon wheels; a well, functioning or not (it could even be a fish pond that looks like a well); boulders and wooden fence posts.

Boulders are usually overlooked by gardeners but there are some fascinating stones, boulders and rocks in all sorts of shapes and colours. Boulders with fossils in them are great conversation starters. Smaller rocks can be used to create a rock garden and this will increase the range of plant life that you can grow in your Texas Style garden. You will be able to plant succulents, small cacti and other small plants that often grow in this harsh environment.

Lighting should be low and subtle so that you can see the stars at night. You could even have a camp fire with log seating or you can accomplish this look by using low powered solar lighting. Solar powered lighting will also save you from having to have an electrician wire up your garden.

When you have finished landscaping in the Texas Style, do not forget to get pleasure from it by eating outside as often as you can. Barbecues, steaks and Texmex food are the order of the day.

How To Pick The Best Material For Your Sewing Project

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Up until fifty years ago, the overwhelming majority of women knew how to sew. All the women that I knew as a boy sewed and knitted and manufactured some of the clothes for me and my four brothers. When I was eight or nine, I and each other child in my class was taught the basics of knitting and before I went off to college, my mother taught me how to take up my jeans, sew on patches and repair my clothes.

Unfortunately, sewing, knitting and repairing clothes has largely died out in the United Kingdom. I now live in Thailand and I do not see much evidence of sewing or knitting here, so I assume that these arts are dying out all over the world among the masses, although I am certain that there are individuals everywhere who still knit and sew.

It is a real shame. If you are going to make your own clothes or furnishings like cushions, pillows or soft toys, it is quite essential that you choose the correct fabric for the job. Using the wrong fabric will make your task more difficult and may even render your work pointless. So here are a few suggestions on choosing the correct cloth for the task in hand.

The first and most obvious thing to do is look at the suggestions on the pattern you are using and if you are a novice take that advice until you know what you are doing. Regrettably, a lot of people do not read the directions anymore. I can not remember the number of times I have seen someone struggling to assemble something and discovered the directions in the bin with the packaging.

Get to know textiles by examining the textiles in the shop. Ask questions about fabrics and look at the fabric on the bolt or roll. If the fabric does not look correct on the bolt it probably will not look right anywhere else either. When you unroll a couple of feet of the bolt, does it lie flat or does it roll up or crumple? Grab a handful and squeeze it. Does it crumple easily? Does it feel correct?

Is the cloth fraying on the bolt? If so it will fray whilst you use it too. Look on the bolt for special cleaning or handling directions. Do they suit your needs?

It is quite difficult to work with satin because it slips easily. T-shirt knit is also difficult because it rolls up on itself. It is probably best to avoid these materials until you acquire some experience

Cotton is the best fabric for beginners because it is easy to work with and everyone is very familiar with cotton goods. We know how they should feel and we can tell good, thick heavy cotton from cheap, thin cotton. We also all know that cotton shrinks. Therefore before you cut you cloth. wash it and cut the shrunken cotton fabric. In effect, you have pre-shrunk it.

The Basics Of Making Quilts

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

If you have never done any quilting before, you may be forgiven for thinking that it looks fairly simple. The fact is that it necessitates a lot of patience, skill and diligence to create a quilt. It really is not as simple as it looks. It takes practice and attention to detail. Given that, you must use good quality textiles if you are considering manufacturing a quilt.

Cotton is all right for the task, but it ought to be the lowest you will go. No polyester or other man-made fabrics. If you do use these cheap fabrics and spend weeks making your first quilt, you will simply regret it. If you make mistakes, but the cloth is decent at least there will be that one saving grace.

Once you have chosen your fabric, you can choose the style or pattern that you want. This may seem backwards, and that is OK. If you want, you can choose the style first and then a fabric to match, but I would recommend that you just stick with cotton for your first quilt.

Next, you have to get hold of a pattern. This is very straightforward. You can either become a member of a local quilting group, where people will give you conventional patterns or sell you modern ones; or you can go on line and look on Google or Yahoo for ‘free quilt patterns’ or you can go to your neighbourhood craft shop and buy one that suits your requirements.

You will also require a good set of tools to make your quilt. It is a good idea not to scrimp on these tools as they are not costly; will make your job a lot easier and will last a very long time. You will need at least one rotary cutter. ‘At least one’ because the large blade cutters are very good for straight cuts whereas a small blade cutter is better for corners or shapes. By the way, these rotary cutters look like pizza cutters.

Because these cutters are sharp, you will also need a cutting board. This can be as simple as a sheet of plywood, trimmed to suit your table top or you can just lay it on the floor. Without a board, you will ruin your table or carpet. You will also need dress-maker’s scissors and large shears. Further requirements are pins, needles, cotton, straight edges and markers.

Your pattern will explain about batting and a back fabric and you must pay a great deal of attention to the recommendations in your pattern.

This article cannot be a ‘teach yourself quilting’ manual, but I hope that it has shown you that you do not need a great amount of apparatus to make very passable bedding quilts. However, with only a little adaptation of the pattern, you could make some beautiful duvet covers. Not many people make duvet covers, so you could either make them exclusively for yourself or sell them.

The History Of The Pillow And The Cushion

Friday, June 10th, 2011

In American phraseology, the words ‘cushion’ and ‘pillow’ are virtually synonymous, but in the remainder of the English speaking world, a pillow is used on a bed for supporting the head and a cushion is used on elsewhere for supporting other parts of the body. A pillow is normally much larger than a cushion nowadays.

The cushion and pillow were most likely first used by well-off Asian men to lounge on. They would probably be referred to as throw cushions nowadays. However, we are going back so far in history that dyes and fabrics were very expensive, so pillows and cushions were just for the wealthy and the patterns were so elaborate that they became pieces of art in themselves.

Needlework became a skilled profession as did weaving. Cushions were large sacks or cases filled with feathers, hair, wool, straw or something equivalent. These days they are more likely to be filled with man-made fibres such as polyester. Down is the most costly filling especially down from the eider duck.

Due to international trade, the idea of the cushion started moving westward and had arrived in Egypt by the time of the Pharaohs. Cushions have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. By the Middle Ages, cushions were to be seen in all the royal palaces of Europe. Cushions were still regarded as representing wealth.

The cushions of the royal palaces were substantial enough to sit in, a bit like modern beanie bags, and even started replacing traditional chairs. In those days, cushions were very substantial sacks manufactured of leather, many of which had needlework designs on them.

Cushions were also used in churches for the wealthy to kneel on when saying their prayers. These special but small cushions were called carreaux because they were square (from the French).

These days cushions are everyday objects because they are much cheaper. Most cushions in the West are 17 inches by 17 inches and the reason for this is the traditional size of a roll or bolt of fabric. A roll of cloth is traditionally 54 inches wide, so it could be cut into three pieces of 18 inches, allowing for seams, this permits the manufacturer to make a 17 inch cushion.

Japanese cushions were much larger and still are, but they have a different role. In the West they are used for support, whereas in the East they are used for sitting on on the floor. In Japanese they are called ‘zabuton’ and measure 20-30 inches square by a couple of inches thick, which is less than a quarter of the thickness of traditional Western cushions.

Zen meditators will frequently sit on another special cushion known as a zafu or meditation cushion, which is placed on top of the zabuton. A zafu can be round or square but is small, often just 8-10 inches in diameter and 4-8 inches thick.

Zabuton are used in all aspects of Japanese life particularly those facets that have religious overtones or traditions such as sumo. Spectators of the sport will sit on zabuton when watching the bouts. If there is a foul or a dispute, spectators frequently throw their zabuton into the ring in revulsion.

The Benefits Of Buying Decent Clothing

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

One of the strangest social or cultural phenomena since the Second World War is the change in criteria which individuals use to purchase garments. For thousands of years before then, people wanted the best possible clothing that they could get and one of the criteria that they used to judge each other was their dress sense or the quality of their clothes.

This all began changing in the Seventies when it became more significant to not be seen wearing the same article too frequently, so it became more desirable to have five cheap shirts that would not last long than to have one top quality shirt that would last for years. How did this change in principles come about?

The most obvious people to blame are the fashion designers (or their imitators) and the advertisers. Individuals without much money to spend on clothes do not like to be seen in the same blue shirt on every other occasion, they would rather have several colours, but perhaps these individuals do not understand the difference in the quality.

The quality of one’s clothing is vital as most women and about half as many men know. First impressions count and bright and cheerful (but cheap) is not as impressive to those who know the difference as quality.

To those people who say that the person should count over the clothing, I would say ‘Yes, in a perfect world. One day, but it is not the way it works now’. Why do people dress up for a date, and especially the first date? Why do people dress up for an interview? And why do individuals dress up to go to court?

It is because clothing matters and first impressions count and deep down, we all know it even though most of us wish that it did not matter so much.

First of all, it is important to find a style that suits you. Then you should purchase items of clothing that are decent examples of that style. They will not be cheap, but is a Hell’s Angel’s leather jacket cheap? Certainly not. Whatever niche you think you fit into or want to fit into, purchase the appropriate clothing to stand out for quality.

I am not saying that people have to dress appropriate to their age group, I am saying that people should dress appropriate to the upper echelons of their niche group. If you would like to become a Hell’s Angel, get one of the best leather jackets and if you want to work in an office, buy yourself a good suit. Just because you cannot tell the difference between a cheap one and a decent one does not mean that your peers cannot as well.

You only have so much opportunity to modify your physical appearance, but you can still make a big impression by wearing quality clothing like a good overcoat, a decent suit, a good cardigan or a good shirt. The people who know the difference will notice and it will not hurt your prospects.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of topics, but is now concerned with the jean jacket. If you would like to know more, please visit our web site at Mens Overcoats For Sale.

Children’s Bedroom Furniture

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Are you thinking of upgrading your children’s bedroom? Have they grown out of it or even wrecked it? Whatever the reason, it has to be done from time to time as your children grow up and have new needs or just require different size furniture. The first things to decide are how much you want to spend and whether you want any contribution from your children.

The answer to the first question, only you can know, but I would like to say that it can be great fun, a real eye-opener and a good bond-forger to have your children in on the decision-taking and the redecoration as well.

Well, OK, the redecoration depends on their ages, but they can help remove the old paper even if they are too young to help with the painting.

I will assume that you are going to ask for your children’s advice. Positively do not take them to the shop first off and hope that you will get rational answers. The best approach is to discuss what they want and then show pictures on the Internet.

Make lots of notes and make certain the kids understand that they have agreed to their choices. The same with the colour scheme.

Attempt to steer them away from dreary, drab, gloomy colours. Most kids like primary colours anyway – yellow, blue and red – so you ought not have a difficulty here. Curtains and chair covers ought to be washable at home, not in a dry cleaners.

Try to get fire-resistant fabrics. If you are concerned about nightly accidents or simple spillages, you could get a few of mattress protection covers as well.

As far as the furniture itself goes, you should purchase the best you can afford. Check the joints and strive not to purchase anything that is nailed or stapled. You want furniture that is bolted or screwed together because it is stronger. You do not need me to tell you that children rock on chairs and bounce on beds.

If your children require a computer table, it can be a decent idea to have it bracketed to the wall or floor so that it cannot be accidentally knocked over, breaking the monitor. Large bean bag cushions are always a good idea as well. They add colour, mirth and a comfortable place to read.

Children of all ages leave things lying around, so put a laundry basket in a corner somewhere and if the children are young, a toy box somewhere else. There should be cupboards and shelves, which is all that older children need. Make sure that there are lots of them and then there can be no excuses for mess.

You may also want to supply a small dustpan and brush as a hint that you expect your children to clean up small accidents themselves. You never know, they may get the idea.
