Home Repairs Do-It-Yourself

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

It appears that there has been a wane in consumer trust in the building and construction industry of late. This may be because of the scams shown on television or the bribery and corruption endemic in the corporate sector, but it is almost certainly the same motivation why so many are now doing home improvements by themselves.

And why shouldn’t they? A little knowledge of the technical aspects combined with an eye for creativity is often enough to do the home improvement on your own.

Why are people turning to DIY home improvements?

There are many people trying to pass themselves off as construction workers, although they do not have a lot of experience in construction or home maintenance and they are literally are out there right now practising, learning their trades on homes like yours and mine across the country.

Not surprisingly, homeowners are finding that the jobs are not being completed to their liking. Sometimes they are even pre-paying for services that do not get done or were not part of the plan.

You do not have to rely on and pay someone to improve your home. Why not try to do it yourself?

You can augment your home?s existing concrete surfaces using acid stains, acrylic paints, epoxy paints, and scoring techniques.

If you are tired of looking at drab gray concrete, there are some easy projects if you are sincere about having a go at home improvement DIY, you can easily give your patio, driveway or garage a revitalizing new look.

Decorative concrete work costs about double that of normal concrete, which is why many people cannot afford it.

However, there are inexpensive methods to embellish concrete after it has cured, without having to pay expert tradesmen.

Acid-based concrete stains are becoming more and more fashionable for coloring concrete surfaces. They chemically react with the fibres in the cement material to produce permanent color with a variegated or mottled appearance similar to that of marble. This results in a natural, stylish looking surface.

Water-based concrete stains are an alternative to acid stains but are much more user friendly because they are so much less toxic. These stains do not chemically react with the concrete; they are absorbed into the porous surface and act like a colorant. The big advantage of water based stains is the wide range of colors on hand.

If you want to risk going beyond the basic staining of your concrete, consider using some scoring techniques to create patterns on the surface.

You can make your concrete resemble a tiled floor for instance. It is just up to your imagination. A mini angle grinder with a 4 inch grinding wheel is the ideal tool for this.

The important thing to remember when scoring is to draw the pattern on the concrete first and ensure you are happy with the way it looks because scoring is irreversible.

Epoxy paints make an outstanding coating for garage floors and basement floors. Many commercial floors have epoxy coatings because of their durability and resilience to chemical spills as well as their appearance.

In recent years, however, it has become very popular for residential use with the availability of an growing quantity of different colors. This is not a tricky job, but the key to successful application is surface preparation.

Epoxy paints have also become available in a water based form making it safe for the DIY’er and perfect for indoor jobs. They cost a little more than stains. For a 400 square foot area, you’ll spend about $200 for the materials required for this project.

So, you see? You do not have to spend big money to improve your home. You have the ability to do it yourself. With some instructions and a little bit of work, anyone can turn boring concrete into a work of art of their own.

How To Run A Wedding Car Business

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Have you ever thought about running a wedding car business? Although it can be demanding, because you do not want to let anybody down on their big day, it is also fascinating and exciting.

Some of the advantages are that you get to own good-looking cars - maybe a Rolls Royce or a Bentley and they are tax-deductible; you meet new people under happy circumstances and you are in the position to help them have a wonderful wedding day.

It is a very demanding industry, because you always have to bear in mind the requirements of your clients and think about how you can fulfill and extend their’ wishes. That is difficult enough, but you also have to remain competitive. I hope that the following tips will be useful.

1] Take care of the conditions under which you keep your vehicles. If you can afford to garage them, they will not collect dust and bird droppings so the paintwork will look better for longer. Do not have a gravel drive, because of possible scratching to the coachwork of the cars.

2] Get one or two really lovely cars. You will need to do a bit of research to find out what couples in your area like, but as a rule of thumb a Rolls Royce or a Bentley are sure bets. Or maybe a stretch limousine. Old vehicles go down well too. Build up your fleet of cars step by step but increasingly. Offer your clients as much choice as you can realistically afford to do.

Many wedding couples will not only need the wedding car, but also vehicles for the guests. Many of them want limousines or old vehicles for their wedding day. But a lot of other cars are required for the guests. Be adaptable and agree to decorate the vehicles according to the couple’s wishes with flowers and ribbons.

2] Employ good, sympathetic personnel. A fully trained chauffeur is a necessity, but a military style chauffeur can add to your firm’s image.

3] It is a good idea to offer different packages or elements that a couple can use to build a package. So, you could offer transportation from the bride’s house to the church as one element. From the church to the restaurant as another element and from there to the chosen hotel, the airport or the railway station, as another element.

4] Make certain that your clients know exactly how long they have exclusive use of the vehicles for. This is useful for them, so that they know exactly how long they have to take photos, eat or chat.

Transportation plays a huge and fundamental part in any wedding day celebrations. In fact, poorly timed or scruffy transportation can ruin a wedding day. If you let that happen, your firm’s standing will suffer badly, particularly in a town or village. You will need a high sense of responsibility; reliable, well-trained, sensitive staff and high quality vehicles that look the part. White wedding cars are popular, but other colours are acceptable, especially for the guests.

Saint Croix Of The US Virgin Islands

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Saint Croix is the biggest of the US Virgin Islands although the capital city, Charlotte Amelie, is located on St Thomas. Saint Croix itself has two towns Frederiksted (pop. 830) and Christiansted (pop. 3,000). The name of the island comes from the earlier Spanish name given by Christopher Columbus in 1493 - Santa Cruz or ‘Holy Cross’. As Santa Cruz, Saint Croix gets a lot of mention in swashbuckling stories of pirates and buccaneers sailing on the Spanish Main.

The populace before the Europeans got there was Arawak and Carib and they had probably been there since about 5000 BC. After 1493 the population of the Caribbean got involved in a 100 years war with the Spanish and the type of people living on the island altered forever.

Saint Croix has been owned and therefore predominantly occupied by the Spanish, The British, the French, the Dutch, the Maltese and the Danish all of whom had slaves and plantations

The slaves were freed in 1848, but many chose to remain on Saint Croix. Descendants of slaves still live on the island. The total population of the island is now roughly 60,000.

English is the official language and is the most commonly spoken, although there is also some Spanish, French Creole and Virgin islands Creole, better known as Crucian, which is spoken by most inhabitants in informal situations.

This Hispanic section of the Crucian population is mostly of Puerto Rican lineage. The US bought Vieques from Puerto Rico during the Second World War and evicted its inhabitants. Many moved to St Croix because of its similarity to Vieques. These people have fitted in well, but also kept a few of their old ways. They usually speak a mixture of Spanish and Crucian English in a unique form of Spanglish.

Continental Americans make up about 13% of the population and mostly live on the eastern side of St Croix. Arab Palestinians are also a sizeable minority owning most of the petrol stations and supermarkets on St Croix. Other modern immigrants have come from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Philippines.

There has been some tension between immigrants and those calling themselves ‘real Crucians’, but it has largely evaporated because of to intermarriage. There have been attempts to define a ‘real Crucian’.

The matter seems to have been sorted out when in 2009, the recommended U.S. Virgin Islands Constitution voted by the Fifth Constitutional Convention proposed three definitions of U.S. Virgin Islanders: “Ancestral Native Virgin Islander”, who have ancestral ties (and their descendants); “Native Virgin Islander”, who were born on the island (and their descendants); and “Virgin Islander”, who are any United States citizen who has lived in the territory for five years.

Christianity, in the form of Protestantism is the main religion, although the Hispanic community is Roman Catholic. There are also small groups of Jews and followers of Rastafari, Islam.

Vacationing With Your Dog In St Croix

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Whether you prefer clear mountain air or the ozone-rich, salty air of the sea, you can find places to take your dog for a walk that are idyllic, even when you are on holiday. If you are a nature lover and a dog lover, you could choose a vacation destination with nature and your dog in mind.

City-bound hotel holidays or long, driving holidays are not very pleasurable for your dog. If a dog is going to be at home all day, he would rather be in his own home all day. Likewise, with driving. He might plead to go the mall with you in the car, but doing a coast to coast run in a scorching fortnight in June, is not really what he is all about.

Therefore, if you are planning a vacation that you think your pet would not really like, why not do him and yourself a favour and leave him at home? Leave him with a dog-loving relative or friend or board him in a kennels that you have researched well yourself.

There are literally hundreds of boarding kennels operating in every state and often there are thousands. Most of them are fine, some are outstanding and the owners of some could do with a stiff talking to. I put my dog in one once that I had not checked out well enough and went away for two weeks. When I got back four hours early, they were not expecting me and my dog looked dirty and forlorn.

I felt awfully guilty and my dog would not ’speak’ to me for a week. Really! No eye contact, no tail wagging, would not always come when called, no joyous running about, just a hang dog appearance for seven days. She must have felt that I let her down badly, which of course I had, by not checking up on the kennels.

A tremendous place to take your dog is St Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. The US Virgin Islands are literally part of the United States of America and you can go there without a passport, with your US dollars and with your dog.

Not every hotel permits animals just as in mainland USA, but there are loads that do. There are also package holidays that will take you and your dog from the airport to the island hotel and back again all for one price.

Of the four main islands in the US Virgin Islands, St. Croix is most likely the best option for going to with a pet dog, because it is less heavily populated than the other islands and is by far the largest.

The hotel or resort will almost certainly not provide feeding dishes, bedding and toys but they will surely have a store where you can buy such things. It is perhaps not worth bringing your own either unless you have a large suitcase and a generous weight allowance. Food for your dog will also be widely available on the island, of course.

St Croix has various sorts of landscape and plenty of activities to take full advantage of them. There are beautiful tropical beaches perfect for swimming or playing in the waves; there are the undulating plains of the old plantations, which are perfect for long walks and there are hills, mountains and rain forest to explore with your dog too.

Is It Costly To Stay In Hotel Suite?

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

If you’re planning on spending at least part of your vacation in a resort hotel and money is no object, odds are you’ll be quite willing to pay top dollar for what you get. But what if you’re on a somewhat tighter budget? Be assured that you can still get a reasonably priced hotel room or suite that won’t break your bank account. Why? Because the best hotels are run by people who understand that they’re not in the business strictly for the money. Indeed, they understand that they provide a service to all their visitors and to the region in which they are located. That’s why many hotel managers know that when families go on vacation, they will want to stay together in a great but still reasonably priced family suite.

What, then, if you have to take a business trip and are in the market for a hotel room? What should you look for? The answer turns out to be rather simple if you don’t want the usual dreary, soulless hotel room most business travelers have to endure. Odds are you’ll want to stay at a hotel that provides its guests with suites that make them feel right at home even as they provide a few extra bells and whistles that are not usually found in the ordinary hotel room. In this way, hotels can cater not just to families, but to large groups of friends or business associates who are looking for an alternative to the usual stale hotel environment they normally have to endure.

If you either run or own a hotel, the first thing you should know is that if you want to continue to do a brisk business, beware of the little things that could make or break the entire stay for your guests. To wit, if your guests include a large family with small children, the last thing they want is an inaccessible room that requires them to navigate through endless corridors and up and down stairs in order to get to the place they’re going to call home until their trip is over, especially if they’re burdened with having to drag around a ton of holiday luggage. And if your rooms are not air-conditioned, don’t expect your guests to return. The last thing anyone wants is to stay in a stale, sticky room after a long hot journey.

If you’re a seasoned hotel veteran, or even if you’re not, one way or another you’re going to realize that the smallest of details can make or break a hotel stay. We’ve already mentioned how lonely and empty a hotel experience can be if the rooms are depressing and dull, so try to find a hotel that is willing to make its guests feel as much at home as they possibly can. For example, ask whether they have high-speed wired or wireless Internet service and whether they will provide you with a telephone. After all, you may be on holiday, but you’ll still want to keep in touch with the outside world. Ask them if they have room safes where you can store your most precious belongings while you’re away from the room ” things like jewelry, money, passports and more. And if your hotel provides you with amenities like coffeemakers, mirrors, hairdryers and even a movie channel or two, you’re bound to feel right at home. In fact, it’s probably safe to say that you’ll come back and visit that hotel again one day.

Are you off to that family reunion? Maybe you just want to go somewhere with a few of your friends. Or perhaps you and your spouse want some quiet time away from the kids. Whatever it is, you can find the perfect hotel getaway. And it doesn’t matter where you go in the United States ” from New York City to Las Vegas and every point in between, every popular American vacation spot has a hotel that will surely give you what you want. Whether you’re on a business trip or a ski holiday, you can find it. And if all you want to do is just go somewhere by yourself and wallow in the lap of luxury, just go out and do it ” and do it in your favorite hotel resort!

Finding Adults Only All Inclusive Resorts

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

There are a few possibilities when talking about going to an adults only all-inclusive resort. Most all-inclusive resorts were designed for families with young children, however there are an increasing amount of adult only all-inclusive resorts.

However, there are also adult only and family nude all-inclusive resorts, especially in Europe and Australia. If you are searching for a nude adult only all-inclusive resort for your vacation, you will probably have to go abroad to places like Greece, Italy, the old Yugoslavia area or Australia.

Most people in the USA, the UK and northern Europe would find sharing a nudist beach with children awkward in these ultra-PC days, but nudist beaches for adults only can be good fun. It is best not to be shy, however some people find it helps to visit a nudist beach alone while others feel more at ease in the company of adult friends. Couples often find adult only nudist beaches exotic, erotic and romantic.

Finding adults only all-inclusive resorts is not difficult with the power of a search engine and the Internet at hand. However, if you want to try nudist adults only all inclusive resorts in the USA, it could be tricky. This is because nudity is a contentious topic in the USA.

If, however ‘by adult only’, you only mean to imply over twenty-one year olds only, then you will have a lot more luck. There are thousands of non-nudist adults only all-inclusive resorts, hotels and cruises around the United States, Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands and everywhere else in the Caribbean.

Adult only all-inclusive cruises are very widespread. Cruising is not really suited to children. There is not enough room and they can get into severe trouble or even drop overboard unobserved until it is too late. Adult only all-inclusive resorts are excellent, if you like living in a chalet or cabin.

In between these two limits of luxury on the all-inclusive vacations front are the all-inclusive hotels. Plenty of hotels, but far fewer resorts, do enforce age restrictions on who can stay there. The Club style holidays are good examples; ‘Club 18-30′ is well-known, but not all of its venues are all-inclusive.

If you are still thinking about nude adult only all-inclusive resorts, you might find it simpler to unearth a collection of topless beaches. These are two a penny in Europe and elsewhere, but in the united States and the some of the Caribbean, you may be able to join a private beach that permits this style of clothing.

Hotel Industry And The Global Crisis

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Hotel loyalty programmes are another method to entice guests to book their holidays at all types of hotels. Over half of frequent business guests belong to some loyalty programme that offers special benefits to customers. Economically strapped travelers want to be rewarded for their loyalty. Many cheap hotel chains are now offering superior rewards, upgrades and extra amenities just to attract entry level customers.

Research indicates a change in holiday plans from long stays away from home to shorter stays nearby at budget hotels and holiday camps. Rapid growth is occurring in the short break market for persons staying from one to four nights. This rise in room nights over the past few years is not large enough to offset the long stay market losses.

Other general economic factors also affect the UK hotel industry. Bad weather, the credit crunch and a decline in jobs work against the industry as holiday travel is curtailed or eliminated. Business travelers are switching to budget hotel brands. This trend can be directly correlated to the timing of the economic downturn beginning in 2008. In a positive reaction, the budget hotel brands have worked hard to improve their offerings to compete with the mid-market brands. Guests can get much better deals than previously. Business brand awareness has been converting to membership in new loyalty programmes.

The Internet benefits the hotel industry because booking rooms is easier. It is a way for brands to reach out to business guests. Guests use hotel websites for information about best deals and to book rooms online. Generic travel websites like Yahoo! Travel, Travel.com or hotels.com are most frequently used by potential guests.

They’re desperate for data,” said Robert Mandelbaum, a hotel analyst with PKF Consulting in Atlanta. “Hotels need information about their guests and especially about business travelers and getting them to sign up for their loyalty programs is the easiest way to get that information.

Automatic Identification Systems On Boats Is Vital To Safer Boating

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Automatic Identification Systems, or AIS, are electronic transponders that are placed on ships or boats that identify it by name, position, type, & call sign. The signal is VHF that is continuously sent out over the course of the vessel’s travels.

This VHF signal is valuable because it relays information to other ships about its course and speed. As the VHF signals come in, the receivers are able to display all AIS-equipped vessels that are transmitting within a certain range. It helps to reduce the chances of collisions on the water by moving water vessels that have the systems. . The data that is received by other AIS-enabled boats is most of the time available on a computer display or positioned as an overlay on a chart plotter. This can help to substantiate radar readout.

Ship navigators utilize AISAIS as a navigational tool to reduce the risk of collision and to chart a safe course to travel. Maritime search and rescue operations can be made much easier by automated identification devices that will specify the exact location of the distressed vessel regardless time of day or the weather conditions.

It helps captains adjust their track and speed in adjusting to other vessels on the water. Ships with over 300 tons of cargo & all passenger ships are required by the International Maritime Organization to be fitted with the marine guidance system. Recreational boaters are not required by law to use the technology, but the maritime technology is increasing in demand by those users. Worldwide, 40,000 vessels are thought to be equipped with this special marine technology. The numbers are increasing everyday.

The number one use is for avoiding collisions. The tracking does not work alone. VHF radio communications can be limited and considering the fact that every vessel isn’t required to have it, it is not the perfect solution. It is not an automated collision avoidance system as defined by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). In the hands of a skilled captain however, it is one of many tools utilized for safe travel.

Sea captains often need help identifying other vessels in a local area in order to make the best decisions on course. That likewise does not mean that all additional types of navigational observation is thrown away. There is certainly, obviously, visual observation in which the captain will often use binoculars to spot far away obstacles or ships. There can also be acoustic observational alerts that a captain has to listen for such as horns, whistles, or VHF radio. Last but not least, there is radar or Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) that can offer valuable navigational data to enhance what the AIS is plotting. Even with all this technology, mishaps can still happen. It is often due to time delays and limitations of radar or even just plain human error when this takes place. The graphical charts and all the other observational tools must be utilized if water travel is to be safe and AIS is a small part of that.
